Why Are Christians Afraid To Follow Jesus?

Once again, the Christian mainstream has turned it's back on the image of God. "...Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me ..." .A brief history:

    • 1830: mainstream Christians do nothing to stop the removal of the Five Civilized Tribes from 20 million acres of ancestral homelands.

•1939: The St Louis carrying 937 Jewish refugees is denied entry into the United States and forced to return to Europe. 254 of the passengers die in the Holocaust as a result.

    • 2015:Christians turn their backs on thousands of Syrian refugees.

This question assumes a fundamentally wrong premise. That one person, you, decides how another person, all others, should follow Jesus. Jesus is redeemer and savior for all. But it is a highly personal relationship that a Christian must follow. For one to say "this is not following Jesus" for another is not blasphemy but it is akin to it. For Ronnie to say that Eric must follow Jesus this way and not his way is tantamount to telling me what I must believe in order to be a Christian -- it just does not work that way.
America is a Christian nation by populace makeup. It is not a Christian nation by fiat or policy. All of the above mentioned tragedies were carried out by a government that Jews and Muslims and Buddhists and Native Americans and Hispanics elect. We most assuredly do not have a Christian Government -- 100% not. Thank God. What is this "image of God" that you have for me. Is He in a white robe with long whiskers or is He an orb? How could you possibly know what my image of God is? There is no innate or Gospel "image of God".
So we Christians are not afraid to follow our God but I would be fearful of following yours.

Your answer clearly reveals that you know very little about the gospel of Jesus. But the good news is, all you have to do is read, and pray. Love is not up for interpretation. If you cannot see the image of God, then you do not know Jesus. The image of God is strewn about the ground in Syria; little boys and little girls ;  blown apart and dismembered. That is the image of God. The image of God has also recently been defiled in Nigeria,Paris, San Bernardino, and in other parts of the world.

The Christian is not better than Jesus. I am not better than Jesus. Jesus suffered a terrible torment, and was then crucified that I might live. That is the standard set by Jesus for the Christian to follow. Our personal happiness, wealth, and safety are not the most important things. It is only our love for one another. It is only love, not the human intellect,  that can elevate us above the world, and allow us to clearly see.

Your words betray a confusion that stems from the fact that you falsely believe Jesus lives only in a Book, and can be freely defined to suit your own personal need or convenience. But Jesus is right here beside me. This is the living Gospel of Jesus. Jesus demands that we help these Syrian children. If we do not, then the Christian Mainstream can only be seen for what it truly is: a fashionable club for capitalist consumers; a nest of hypocrites and vipers, counting their money while pretending Jesus.

It does not matter whether or not we go to church on Sunday. It doesn't matter if we call the name of Jesus, Bob, Carol, or Francine. A name is only a fictional placeholder for what is real.  Love is real Eric. Love doesn't care about a terrorist, over the safety and well being of a child. Love will even sacrifice it's own child to save the life of another. Love reciprocates and love replenishes. Follow the world, follow America if you must. But  I am following Jesus.

I think that that is wonderful Ronnie. Perhaps just by chance you and I share the image of God as pure love. I wish more Christians had that view also. Other than the Vatican "Holy See" is their a nation of Christianity? I might move there.

The U.S. has separation of church and state!
The U.S. is also a country that consists of many diverse religions as well as having citizens who are atheist.
Therefore government decisions by elected officials are not bind by any one religion. Our constitution trumps the bible or any other religious document when it comes to governing our nation.
According to World Christian Encyclopedia there are 33,000+ total "Christian" denominations!
Jesus said to "Turn the other cheek".
Obviously if the U.S. followed that creed it would not be a super power.
Odds are the U.S. will be spilling American blood in order to allow Syrian refugees to return to their homeland.
Having said that the U.S. annually provides more foreign aid than any other nation on earth! And yet it is not "perfect"!
We understand for example that Islam is not about cutting off people's heads and blowing up people to pieces. However those who make these attacks claim to be followers of Islam working on behalf of Allah!
My point is within every large religious base are various sects and groups who disagree among themselves.
Just as some people are wrong to paint a wide brush on Muslims there are those who choose to paint a wide brush on Christians.
Ultimately no individual is perfect and therefore no group is perfect.
    Ecclesiastes 7:20
"For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not"

dashingscorpioposted 8 years agoin reply to this

Actually it is our government or elected officials that make policy for the country. Odds are half of the people are in favor of something and the other half is against it!
The political party in power makes the call not the Christians.

wrenchBiscuitposted 8 years agoin reply to this

That's beside the point. Jesus didn't follow government. Ever heard of the Montgomery Bus Boycott ? Somebody had to set that in motion. It wasn't the government. The people make the call if the people want to. At least they can try. See many trying?

We know what happened to Jesus! Do you know how many people died during the Civil War? Civil Rights battles of the 60s? And these were people who already lived here!
It's unrealistic to expect that same type of sacrifice for non citizens.

A good point, and it clarifies my position. If you stand with Jesus, you do not hesitate to make the sacrifice when children are being murdered. That is why I stated earlier that this is not about the secular community, but those who claim Jesus.

Some Christians are turning their backs because they are afraid and don't trust the refugees.  In the case of the Jewish refugees, that was wrong, because Jewish people don't want to kill Gentiles.  However, among the refugees there could be ISIS people, or potential ISIS people, and I think that is what everyone is worried about.  True, you should help the needy, but I don't know that the bible verse in reference to that is relevant in this case.

From the perspective of a Christian, fear is no excuse. This is why they are held to a higher standard. If you believe in eternal life, and the promise of salvation, you do not allow the fear of death to shape your destiny.

Your question is, at the very best, rhetorical, and at the very worst, ignorant. Your hypothesis that these incidents are a purely Christian responsibility shows a prominant disregard of simple civics. You appear from your use of the language to have some degree of intelligence, yet your question denies it.
Government policy is not dictated by any one faith, so the placement of blame you so glibly throw around is as absurd as your supposition that you have the right to determine anybody's relationship with God other thsn your own. You know absolutely nothing about any of us, yet you confer on yourself tbe right to be both judgemental and rude in answering people. who have politely attempted to answer the question in a manner that implies a conversation, something you are obviously incapable of having.
Don't place your idea of perfection on other people. It will turn around and bite you when you least expect it. "Judge not lest you be judged by the same measure..." Are you, by chance, familiar with that ine?

To answer this question is that people realize there is something wrong !
Have you ever had a GPS that you followed and it lead you to a dead end street, why because it was outdated, it did not adjust to detours,  road construction,  faulty instructions can lead you wrong, once you go down that path you have to reroute and the best way is to use a real map. Another source to get to your destination,  many people have been lead wrong and have given up the trip to life eternal.
many people have been lead wrong ,  they will not change route to get to the goal of their destination,  they lost faith during the trip.
Mt 7:14 whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are finding it.

Mt 7:21“Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of the heavens, but only the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will.
Notice Jesus said the one doing the will of his Father will.
he certainly did not say do my will or name himself here.
Because he also does his Father’s will.

Joh 6:38 for I have come down from heaven to do,( not my own will ), but the will of him who sent me.

Ro 2:13 For the hearers of law are not the ones righteous before God, but the doers of law will be declared righteous.

It is clear we have both  situations , these people that know and hear the knowledge , and the other people exercise the true knowledge,  it is a way of life for them . These are the few that are on the cramped road to living forever in a troubled free world.
    Totally different .

Yes, a difference. The fireman who walks into the burning building to save a child is following Jesus; placing his own life in the hands of God to save another. There is no greater love. The world believes Jesus lives only in a book. Very stupid men.

  10. profile image52
    Norine Williamsposted 8 years ago

Because they are not "True Worshipers" of Jesus (John 4:24)!  How can one forget "No weapon formed against me will prosper" (Isaiah 54:17)?  Do they not BELIEVE His Word?  Then, why fear, if "Christ dwells within you" (Romans 8:10-25)?

If Scripture (His Word) is how one "interprets," then forms an opinion of "one's Jesus," why is IT WRITTEN for ALL?  If one has TRULY received "revelation" from the Holy Spirit, we should ALL be "ON ONE ACCORD" (Acts 1:14)!

Therein lies the problem and is why so MANY denominations exists!  "Christians" have read "the letter" (II Corinthians 3:6) and have "formed an opinion" or "interpreted" ("perceived") the Word of God rather than allowing the Holy Spirit "reveal" TRUTH in His Word!

Did not Jesus say in John 14:26 and 16:13 that the Holy Spirit would "lead and guide us into ALL truth?"  Did Jesus not send the Holy Spirit (on the Day of Pentecost; Acts 2:2) to do that?  Have "Christians" not done as "commanded" in Acts 1:4 which was to "WAIT" for the promise (Holy Spirit) which, saith he, ye have heard from me?"  Did we not "hear from Him" in John 14:26 and 16:13?

Then why call yourselves "Christian?"  What MOST have done is "interpreted" His Word and "perceived" their righteousness! Did Proverbs 3:5 tell us to "Lean not to OUR OWN understanding?"  It's not about our "intelligence," but what IS WRITTEN in His Word which asked us not to do ANYTHING but "WAIT" for Holy Spirit's leadership and guidance!

If ALL would have "WAITED" as commanded, a question such as this would not be imposed! We would KNOW that Ronnie is RIGHT for the Holy Spirit does not LIE (Numbers 23:19)!

What happened to "Love thy neighbor as thyself?"  Is it not in His Word?  Get Real - "Christians!"

I think the western world are better off, if everybody become an atheist, or return to pre Christian pagan, religion. No religion that follow the Christian god, is truly good, regardless of Judiasm, Christian or Muslim. Religion war reign this region following this god, for the past 1500 years. The only return it seized in the west, is because we are not religious anymore, but still there are some Christian groups stiring up troubles.  Radical muslim groups in the Middle East, is even worse.
FYI Take a look at this bible verses.
"And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire." (Leviticus 21:9)

"Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean." (Leviticus 12:2)

"But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days." (Leviticus 12:5)

"Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works." (Revelation 2:22-23)

Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works

I can see what you're saying, but to label all believers for those actions would be wrong!
1780s in England, it was a group of Christians who stood up and said slavery was wrong, the fight took fifty years and then only got the slave trade banned but they fought on and eventually it was all changed.
1933 Germany. The Christians opposed Hitler from day one. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was in the US at the time of the election, he went back to Germany to be a voice against the regime all the way through. My figures show as many as ten thousand Germans actively worked against Hitler not to mention the fifty or so thousand Christians who went to the gas chambers because they refused to bow the knee.
1940 at the height of the war Hitler did order a boatload of Jews to leave from Romania. The boat was intercepted and turned round by the Royal Navy! When Churchill found out he went ballistic and immediately ordered the Royal Navy destroyer to give chase to the ship and make sure the ship reaches Israel, he also gave the order that NO JEWS WERE TO BE TURNED BACK and made it plain it was court martial for anyone who dares try otherwise.
As for today, from day one Jordanian Christians, Turkish Christians, Iraqi Christians, Kurdish Christians and Christians from the west have been right in the thick of things, they aren't shouting it from the rooftops what they're doing but they're right there helping and (in the case of the Kurds) protecting them with their own lives!
We could do more, that I will grant you, but there are many hundreds truly living out what it means to be disciples! They just aren't making a big thing about it as they want their reward to be in heaven not here on earth!
    Hope that makes sense

Jesus is the definition of love. Love leaves no one behind, especially a child who has been brutalized, terrorized, and who is living in fear.

Love? Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil...

I had a missionary friend once tell me "The reason the refugees are coming is because we Christians refuse to go to them with the good news! We refuse to follow God's call, so he brings them to us"

In my view, the answer is actually very simple. Following any teacher of the mankind is almost impossible because people's consciousness is not evolved enough. Intellectually we can grasp many things of higher teachings, but we can't implement them into our life styles and mind styles, into our ways of coexisting with one another. We are simply not wired in our brains (as yet) for it At our best, we can put up a sad imitation of those teachings.

Asking "why" we are not trying harder  -  would be more like a rhetorical question, not one with any practical value  -  again, because it all starts with the level of awareness. Intelligence doesn't help, because many tyrannical leaders were very intelligent  -  and so are those behind every atrocity on the globe, behind greed, organized crime, mass deception.

There are many wonderful people in this world, but neither they can live like saints. For quite a long time, this is not a world of robes and sandals. Mankind has to go through growing stages which often include "growing pains". We all need more love, less criticism; and then maybe we can open our eyes a little wider and snap out of our soap operas that are weakening our spirits.

A very interesting take on man as a whole, quite applicable I believe. Our homogenousness makes us fall short. But sometimes we get it right as a soul and as a group of souls. Rhetorical question at best.

wrenchBiscuitposted 8 years agoin reply to this

Your assertion that there is no practical value to the question is a defeatist attitude. If the African had not questioned why they had to sit in the back of the bus they would still be there. Christians do not sit on the sidelines.

As an individual who struggles to make ends meet, I can't do anything to help the Syrian refugees.  If i were President of the US, as one of the most powerful people in the world, I could do a lot more to help them, but even then, I could do only so much.  The real solution for them is for that war to end and their country restored.  The President of the US can't do that - but Jesus, the most powerful being in the universe, can.
The real question is, why doesn't Jesus follow Jesus?
