Who is the greatest rapper alive?

I'm partial to old school hip hop myself, but which artist currently alive do you feel is the best?

Eminem..................................crude....but aren't they all.  Storytellers are better rappers.  I like the old hip hop too.  Tone Loc, Heavy D, Young MC, Sir mix-a-lot....The big butts song,Naughty by Nature, Tag Team and of course MC Hammer!
You didn't think this old granny would know did you?

do you like slick rick ? he's one ot the top 3 story tellers ...

      1. Slick Rick
      2. Pete Rock
      3.Nice and Smooth / Smooth B

No one can tell a story like these 3

This question is difficult because of the different genre's of rap. I've always been a big fan of the storytellers. A rapper that can pick a subject and stay on subject is a rare thing these days. But rappers like Dana Dane, Slick Rick and UTFO were masters of this art. Later Will Smith and Method Man picked up the art.

Pure lyricist are rare too. Rakim was the best of his generation. As much as I hate to admit it, Eminem is the best of this generation.

Ice Cube tops the list of Gangster Rappers because there was always a message in his music. It was never violence for violence sake. Scarface would be a close second to Cube for the same reason.

They were no better party rappers than the Digital Underground. I could list a top 100 list of party tracks, but they made party albums. LMFAO seems to be following in their footprints, but Humpty and the gang are still the kings.

Speaking of Kings, Kurtis Blow, Run D.M.C. and LL Cool J are three of the founders of rap itself. You can not put their music in any category except foundation.

So to ask who the greatest rapper Alive is an open ended question. But it has caused me to think about alot of music that I loved growing up. Now if you will excuse me, I'm going to play King of Rock until my kids ask me if I've lost my mind!

Rakim is like the cat you can't touch, he's like God on the Mic, Scarface is also dope to me he is like the only southern rapper to make sense to me besides Outkast, so many good dudes, EPMD, The Leaders with Busta and a Tribe called quest..etc etc

That's a tough question! I would have to put up a list: Kanye West, Drake, Ludacris, Jay Z, Eminem.

Not exactly in that order, but those would be my top 5 right now.

I'm not much of a rap guy, but I always liked Chuck D (Public Enemy)'s style... and Ice-T started his own metal band (Body Count) so he's OK in my book, too. big_smile

I've been recently acquainted with Chuck D because of Public Enemy's participation on SellABand.  I am one of the people that contributed to support their album "Most of My Heros STILL Don't Appear on No Stamp."  I've been really impressed.

Who is the best now ? it all depends ..if were counting old school artist ? no one is stopping Rakim "The God MC" if not ..i would have to say Common or Jadakiss, i mean Jada has 2 albums but is relevant ..never changed his style...also Common ..who is the only MC to go into the commercial game head on and keep his style, lots would say Jay-Z but he's too much of a biter ..Eminem and Nas lyrically get my vote s well...but i think Common and Jada as one covers the game lyrically

lol, I like Common and his "I used to love her." Just shooting off the top of my head on the best alive, that's what first comes to mind.  Common and Jada, I'll give you that.

I like Rakim too but don't know if he would be my favorite in old school.
