   What's the better sounding middle name?
   
   For a main character in a book, what middle name has a better ring to it?
   Hayley Elizabeth Summers
   Hayley Amberlynn Summers
   
   Her middle name will be used sparingly, but when it is brought up, I do want the name to sound phonetic and real. Which one sounds better?

   Hayley Amberlynn sounds better. Sounds more romantic.

   Honestly, I've always been partial to Elizabeth as a middle name. Hayley Elizabeth just has a better ring to it. Amberlynn takes a little spin, a different shift in saying the name. It might halt the reading and make someone re-read it mainly because I've never heard of someone's middle name as being Amberlynn. Hayley Lynn sounds more believable.

   Amberlynn sounds too contrived.  Sometimes less is more - keep it simple and instead of worrying about her name sounding good, make her memorable, give her characteristics that make her stand out.

   I would choose Elizabeth.  I've never actually heard the name Amberlynn before but it is beautiful.  Although Amberlynn is a nice name, if you are going for phonetics and reality, I would choose Elizabeth.  As well, Hayley Elizabeth seems to sound better than Hayley Amberlynn.  However, Amberlynn Elizabeth is nice as well   Good luck on your book.

   If she's poor and from the south, name her Amberlynn. Otherwise, Elizabeth sounds dignified and traditional.

   I like the sound of Elizabeth better. Also you might look at the initials (chances are at least a few of your readers will).
   Hayley Elizabeth Summers = HES
   Halyey Amberlynn Summers = HAS
   
   Does it make any difference to your story or your character? Will it be a problem for you or your readers?  If it's not a problem and it doesn't make a difference, then don't worry about it.

   I believe that Elizabeth would be the better choice, it could be because it is my middle name. I do believe that the name should suit the person and time. Have you thought about checking out the babies names web site and make sure that the meaning of the name as well as it's origin fit the character.

   I like Elizabeth better - it has a better rhythm when I try to say the full name out loud.  Amberlynn is cool, but feels like too many syllables when you try to say the full name.  Hayley Lynn Summers sounds good too.

    I'm partial to Haylee Barleycorn Summers and Hailey Jazminder Summers.  I think you should give a unique middle name.  Even if you don't think it sounds realistic, you'd be surprised at what kinds of weird names people have in real life.  Just watch the Maury show.  Any way, it's fiction, so there's nothing wrong with a little enhancement of reality.
