Isn't that special?  He works in IT and they're using an outsourcing company to fill the jobs of his 20 team members (will affect 200 people).  4 months to find a job.  We're already in financial straights from pay cuts.  May I just say I'm, well, worried and nauseous?  Will this ever end?  sad

Hon, I'm so sorry. Mine too was laid off just recently.

His company hired an out placement service that has provided him with some great tools in looking for work.

First things first, make sure his resume is up to date with what HR & hiring managers are looking for.

      Make sure he is "LinkedIn".

Depending on where you live and if you are willing to relocate (we are) I was just on the Hewitt Packard website and Google's company website & they are both hiring IT people.

I will tell him, thank you.  We will do what we have to, even if it means moving from our beautiful state.

If you want, we can chat over email too, hubby has learned so much from this out placement company.  I can share what he's learned.

As lrohner said, keep him on a pedestal.  Also do whatever you can to help him not get depressed.  Keep reminding him its not his fault.

Thanks, Jane.  I will send you off an email a bit later (when it's calmer here).  Definitely keeping him on a pedestal...  He knows logically it's not his fault, but I know he feels "responsible" for his family.  I think I need to go cry in a bathroom now.

Thanks, Misha.  We just don't have time or money for that kind of learning curve.  Self-employment sure sounds tantalizing about now...  STUPID company.

Sorry to hear that. Hope he gets a good separation package from the company (or will he?). In any case, chin up WS. Maybe there's a hidden opportunity here. If you need to rant or just talk to someone, just drop a note here in the forums.

Thank you all so much.  Yes, he's now "LinkedIn". Trying to be positive, I am.  But, the Oregon job market is the pits of the world.  We love it here, and REALLY don't want to leave.

Poor guy.... He's networking like a maniac.  Taking it like a champ, trying to stay busy.

Again, thanks all for your kind words.

    Laura

I'm single, WS, and just got laid off myself so I know where you're coming from. Put hubby on a pedestal right now and let him know that whatever happens, he's not letting you down and you know that he will do his very best.

My thoughts are with you. Keep us up-to-date.

I wish I had a job for him Laura. Unfortunately I don't. Just as an option, he can look at self-employment on the Internet. It is doable, but it takes a couple of years to get up to speed, though...

Sorry to hear that, I hope that things work out for you. They always do, things always get better, but I hope that it is sooner rather than later wink

Oh crap! That company must be bleeding badly, very stupid or both!
You are great wordscribe, I know you will keep it bolted down while you guys find another opportunity.

Don't forget, those kids have had a wonderful start in life, it is written all over them! smile You are their mother! The hardest most demanding job on earth and you do it daily, and as a fully qualified superwoman, your superman will be fine too.
No need for perfection, love will do it all ok! smile

Thanks, ryankett and earnest.  I'm trying to be as Polly Anna as possible.  We even went so far as to say, who knows, it could turn out to be a good thing!  lol

Will keep you posted.  Giving laptop to poor husband!

Wordscribe, speaking as one of those husbands whose been on the short end of the employment stick, you don't necessarily have to be "as Polly Anna as possible".  Or maybe you do; you're the one who knows him well, obviously.

When it's been my turn in that barrel, though, all Pam has needed to portray is an attitude of, "You and me against the world, babe".  (She's good at that, fortunately.)  I mention this mainly 'cause I'd hate to see you get an ulcer or worse from trying to cheerlead all the time when you really need to scream and cry and all that.

Um, gotta confess my ignorance now:  What is IT?

wordscribe41posted 14 years agoin reply to this

Thanks, Ghost!  Good advice.....  I like that attitude.  IT means information technology.  Not ignorance, no worries.  Probably wouldn't know what it was either if not for him.

Gonna have lunch with my best friend tomorrow, will let it out then.  Just not the best timing here yet.  Thanks for your concern.  We will get through this...  smile

Thanks for the info; seems like I must have known the definition of IT and simply forgot....

As to timing, you would certainly be the best one to know about that.

It seems a good time for your hubby to start an IT co. with some of his co-workers. Then start tendering the work that is being outsourced. hmm

NZ Ecomony is not so low as yours... Our OCR is still @ 2.5% so money is cheap. But Unemployment is still too high... it's affecting the number of Whitebait being caught (& sold). smile

    Keep your head up mate.
It's all just a camping trip!

    I'm so sorry. sad

That is just the pits. I live in MI, and here the people who ARE working are working 14-15 hours a day or, like you say, their hours and wages keep getting cut.

Misha's idea about internet work might help tide you guys over, especially since he has IT skills. Still it seems like there's only so many people the internet can absorb too. Everybody who can so much as type the word 'cat' is over at Elance scrounging work these days.

    Hang in there.

Thanks so much, Emi, Brenda and Pam.  I'm definitely not alone, I know that.  WE WILL SURVIVE, I tell you.  MI has had a tough run...  One of my favorite states, I used to spend my summers up in the pinky of the state on a beautiful lake called Crystal Lake, in a very small town called Frankfort (near Beulah, if you're familiar with that). Some of my fondest memories are climbing Sleeping Bear's dunes.  Gorgeous place...  I miss it there.

It IS really pretty here. smile

I moved up here almost three years ago, to take a job at a bank. The bank folded at the beginning of this year but I quit just before that. It was a horrible job, the worst. I don't miss it. Got a job not long after for a magazine and video distributor--they went bankrupt too, about three months after I took the job. Now the state is short $3.5 BILLION for next year's budget. Detroit will be bankrupt by the end of 2009.

Never a dull moment around here! yikes

    Hey wordscribe,

So sorry about your husband's situation.

Having been there myself (forcing me to become self-employed), and having supported my ex-husband when it happened to him, I know what you guys are going through.

My advice? Be his rock, but not at your own expense. I know you want to hide your fear from him, but that can build up inside you and all of a sudden one lay off can birth a myriad of other concerns that can paralyse both of you.

Better to be concerned and proactive together. When I say concerned I don't mean the wailing and moaning and rending of clothing type; just the quietly realistic kind.

    You'll get through this.

    Take care,

    Linda

Wow, this is fabulous advice, the kind I might like to post of the fridge.  Thank you so very much for taking the time to comment.  It means a lot to hear from others who've been in the same or a similar situation.  smile
