Do you dread spending the holidays with the in-laws?

Why or why not? A majority of people that I know who are married are always complaining about this very thing, do you have fun instead?

My mother-in-law, not at all. We talk to each other all the time and are best friends. But my father-in-law, I run in the opposite direction. So yes, I'm terrified of being around him. My partner doesn't like my family and I have to drag him to Ruston with his heels leaving deep tracks in the ground.

I have yet to hear from even one person that they generally get along well with the in-laws. Good to hear that you get along with your mother in law.

I used to think the hating the in-laws thing was a stereotype or myth, but I know quite a few people who hate their in-laws and have horror stories.

While my husband likes my parents, my husband hates his whole family, including his parents, so we never visit them.

I thought it was a myth too. Now my understanding is that this is more like the norm.

So sad that we can't pick 'em! I stopped talking to my sister years ago because of her horrific personality.

I bet we could exchange stories about toxic family members all day!

LifeandLuxury, I haven't talked to my own mother in years. The tragic and bizarre reasons are best left for a book that I have yet to write.

You appear to be one of the few happy exceptions.

My in-laws have passed away.  But when we were a young couple, yes, we both dreaded because--well let's just say there were some compatibility issues.  Now we spend holidays with my daughters-in-laws and it is wonderful.

I believe a new movement needs to be started that says you are no longer required to spend your holidays with toxic people that you don't get along with and don't want to be around.

Amen. I think this is why people become estranged from their family members -- because life is more peaceful apart. On days like holidays, you really want that peace.

In-laws, my own family, it's all the same if you ask me, because for some reason, people always chose the holidays to quarrel and bicker and it's very tiring...
