What was the first moment you realized you were getting older?
That was when I went back to college at the age of 32 to a school that had what is called "traditional" students. So all under 21 and living in dorms. It was last semester and I was 32 years old, four kids and one that just turned 13. It was Theories of Personality and Therapy class and I was contributing to our class discussion and had to reference, "Back when I was such and such an age in 1985" and than my classmate next to me literally jumps out of her chair and yelled out "OMG I though you were 24! Now you having four kids makes so much more sense!" Yea that was the moment a hair turned grey
A young boy of about 7 years old said to me "You can't run. You are old." I had just come back from the gym and had done my usual workout of 3 miles. I didn't want to burst his bubble so when he told me that he had done a 5k with his dad (who is my age!) I didn't tell him that I do that distance 3 times a week. I just said "Great job!" and then I realized that I am old from his point of view! It made me laugh.
Now I know I am old and I can still run. I hope to keep it that way!
I think there are many moments that let you realize that you're getting older. When you're a kid, your favorable milestones are 15 1/2 and getting a drivers license, then being legal and able to vote at 18, and then still again 21 and able to drink (depending on what state you live in).
I remember the first time a kid (2 years younger than me), said, "it's not like it was in the olden days, like when you were a kid" I was 18! In my 30's it was my first grey hairs. Now, it's different, I received my welcome card from AARP this year. So, kind and thoughtful of them, wouldn't you say?
So much for one moment. lol, but that's the joy of the question now isn't it!
Whenever I have to explain to a person having their first smear - about the National Women's debarkle (sp??) that resulted in what we call the National Cervical Screening Register (Look it up - NZ is the only country in the world where the cervical screening is written into legislation - no its not illegal to NOT have a smear - but those who are smear takers (such as myself) are bound by law to do certain things with results etc).
Why does this remind me I'm getting older - I remember parts of this news story when it was happening 20yrs ago...I had NO idea what it was being like 10yrs old. But most of the girls I'm doing first smears on now are 20!!!! So they have no idea! Makes me feel so old being 30!
Tho on other days - I still get ID'd for alcohol (legal at 18) or entering a casino (legal at 20) at 30, so I can't complain if I look under 25 (you get ID'd for alcohol and cigarettes here if you look under 25...I always give them a big grin, cause they make my day!)
Just realize it when you ask the question.
I am always feeling the youth in me but after you asked, I have to admit that I am getting old. Must find a way to keep myself fit as I move into the old age.
