Do you Believe We're Overpopulated? If so, what should we do to fix it?
It is the biggest problem in the world today. Has been for a least three or four decades. Overpopulation is creating just about all of our other environmental and social problems.
I recall looking at an electronic sign which showed how quickly the world was being populated people wise, and how quickly acres of forest were being denuded way back in 1975. It was frightening even them.
What can we do about it?
The only action we can take is our own action in our life. We can't change other people. We might be able to influence them, persuade them, but we cannot change them. So what is the answer. Look to you own life, your own family.
I'm guilty of helping world overpopulation. Two people, my wife and I, now have three children and four grandchildren. In other words, two have become nine, and we're just an average, 'Westernized' family. Imagine the situation if some of the Third World countries where parents often have huge families in the hope that at least a few of their offspring will be around to look after them when they grow old. Until this changes, the popluation crisis will continue.
I have not given birth but I have many, many children. I am a mother to my sisters' children because my sisters were not very responsible. My nieces and nephews have gone to college and have professional jobs.I am now like a grandmom to their kids
I agree with @Clarkscoop. Overpopulation is a myth perpetrated by those who want to murder 6+ billion of us to a more manageable 500 million slaves. Of course, you won't learn this in the Corporate Party media.
It was announced (today) in the U.S. we have the lowest birth rate since the 1920s! http://news.yahoo.com/us-birth-rate-hit … 49793.html The real reason social security is in trouble is there aren't enough people to support the baby boomers!
Yes, and senior citizens are living much longer now than ever before...sapping far more money from the system than they paid in.
Sledgehammer, do you have parents? Do you know you'll be a senior citizen one day? Seems like being old is the new gay, which was once the new black.
I think so but how is it that others FIX what they haven't broken? For example, I am a young lady who has made the CHOICE to not have children. However, my choice is not popular or even well thought of by many. Personally, I understand all of the costs from birth through college and the pains and body changes and lack of free time or even career time that having a child could bring about.
Nevertheless, I think that although every person has a choice that more people should not be having children before they can afford to or otherwise take care of them. They need to think more about the life they'll be creating and ALL, not just part, of what LIFE REQUIRES in the modern world. Ideally, marriage should come first or at the very least having a couple 2 or 3 hundred thousand in the bank specifically for the child. People can adopt or make use of surrogates if they have reproductive problems as they have for many decades.
I could go on and on about people that I know of who have or keep having children they cannot handle emotionally or financially. They are literally creating more problems for themselves and the justice system to name a couple. I could go on and on about the government resources gobbled up by those who've come to "expect aid" from taxpayers for their children.
There are many who say it's not a problem and that it is a person's choice. America is a free country, being free to speak, I only agree that it's their choice. The only thing that can "fix" this is making people not be so selfish and shortsighted. That must come from within them. Apparently, it hasn't worked in decades.
But at what point do we stop saying it's ok for people to continue on damaging out chance at survival as a species and start implementing restrictions? If we continue on, we'll destroy the one thing that's keeping us alive
There is no clear cut easy answer especially here in the USA. People must choose wisely, but many don't. People are free to choose and still many choose to not plan, be selfish, and unrestrained when it comes to having children.
Express10 there is a easy answer that answer is get Government out of the way and let the private industry do what it does best solve problems, we are not over populated that is a myth. I suggest you research, gloablist, NWO, Un Agenda 21..
We have the lowest birth rates in the U.S. since the 1920s!
http://news.yahoo.com/us-birth-rate-hit … 49793.html
It's been said America throws away enough food to feed Canada. Our "shortages" are man made. There's lots of open land too.
We are overpopulated in that many people have and continue to have children that they can't care for financially, emotionally, or otherwise. Some areas of the world are grossly overpopulated. DianeTrotter has brought up a good point.
I totally agree with you Express 10. Also there is such a thing as birth control If you have tons of money and time and have the emotional/mental capcity to take care of lots of children go for it. But when you can't take care of yourself . NO! No
I think population redistribution might help. However, that would mean building infrastructure to support a population: houses, utilities, jobs, schools, transportation systems, etc. It might help for a while.
It would create jobs for a little bit though
Do you want to be told where you can live?
Told that you must move to Siberia because they have an opening?
Interesting idea, but the idea of scarcity is a lie. Fossil fuels are running out, but energy is abundant. Non-oil-based energy has been actively suppressed.
Borsia, tyranny of Siberia is nothing compared to tyranny of eugenics.
I think it is more about poverty and ignorance in the Philippines. Young provincial women come to the city to work as maids. They fall in love, get pregnant and the guy leaves them. The RH bill will give them educated choices.
Yes. I believe in contraception, but not abortion. In the Philippines it's the poor who are overpopulated, people become single parents so much it's an epidemic. There is this Rh Health bill being passed which will distribute condoms for free to the poor and educate them on their options.
Meanwhile those with money can buy contraceptives at any drug store. It's so hypocritical.
I agree, abortion (murder) is never an answer. But I feel with the right (unselfish) management, we can thrive with several Trillion on Earth. I think the RH bill is evil. We can teach the people here in the Phils prosperity.
lone77star, I understand where you're coming from regarding the RH bill. But I know a family that had 12 children, 6 died as babies because they couldn't afford medicine.
Half of their kids dying, what a shame. But most often, a lack of family planning is the problem. Poor people tend to have more children than those well informed about family planning. Financial and other stresses only grow further with each child.
We now have well over 7 Billion people on a planet that might sustain a long term population of 4 – 5. The growth of that population is ever accelerating and there is certainly no indication that it will slow let alone reverse.
There will be some sort of natural scale tipping though there is no clear path that it will take. Most likely will be war over food & water or disease, natural or induced.
But the planet is already crashing and even if we could cull 3 Billion overnight it is questionable whether it could recover without the population dropping to very low levels for a long time.
It won’t be the first time humans have come close to extinction but our medical technology is producing a population that is so genetically flawed it may well be the last.
The only thing that can be done as a society is to follow the lead of China and limit couples to 1 child. They are referred to as cruel even as evil but they are the only country actually doing anything at all when it comes to taking action.
I personally chose not to have children long ago, having seen this coming 40 years ago.
I’m old enough not to be all that concerned on a personal level, if I should die tomorrow I had a good ride. Still it is a great tragedy that mankind has taken this incredible planet and plunged it into ruin in such a short time.
I still think there needs to be the element of choice. In China women are known to have the highest rates of depression and suicide. Deciding whether to keep a baby is so personal and it's wrong for others to take that choice away from you.
Part of depression rates for women in China though is the cultural need for ensuring they have a boy to carry on the family name. There is a lot of pressure to make sure at least one of those two children is a male.
TP it is 1 child not 2.
GOL; When population gets that out of control personal choice is one of the things we loose. You can't take a hard stand and then start making exceptions. Not saying that nobody gets away with it.
Borsia, if we get to the point as a society that we feel we can take this choice from others and justify it, then society has been diminished in quality.
Sounds like you and the Globalists (NWO) would get along just fine.
Personally, I think the planet could support a few Trillion with the proper management. Some like spreading boogie man stories to create fear and control.
GOL; no argument there except to say that when some take too much others will pay by being left with less.
China has a population of between 1.3-1.4 Billion (same as India) and their leaders realize that it is destroying the country and can’t stay th
Borsia, in Spain families CHOOSE to have just one child because of the high cost of living. If people are informed of their choices and given options they will choose what's best for themselves and their families.
GOL: that is great for those countries where the people choose to limit themselves but in other countries it will have to be forced at some point just like China.
This will be especially hard where churches condemn contraception.
Borsia,
China is doing it the wrong way, but it's consistent with their culture and history of emperors who gave them no choice, followed by communism where there is no choice. But educated people will make good choices., No need to force them.
GOL; as someone who has lived in China and know them quite well I suspect that you know very little about their culture or history.
If they are going about it the wrong way what is the nright way?
Borsia,
Are you saying that with your exposure to Chinese culture, you conclude that they are incapable of making educated decisions about their own families, even if they were given the information and options to do so?
The masses have little to no understanding of science at all, this is true of almost all 3rd world countries. Simply offering information would mean nothing.
Things are improving but very slowly. Most have no knowledge of anything outside of China.
I live in a third world country, and the masses are very bright though undereducated. China is overpopulated because the communist system doesn't allow them to travel and live elsewhere. They solve it in oppressed areas by forced abortion.
If they are not overpopulated why should they need to leave?
I just read that they are considering altering the 1 policy for urban couples, rural couples are already allowed 2.
Technically forced abortion is illegal, but it still happens,,,
Borsia, I agree with you that life would be boring if everyone agreed. (Your comment on my page). I also enjoyed your blog and read about the piece you wrote re the beach in Chiina. BTW Chinese in Taiwan, Philippines, elsewhere do birth control.
GOL; In China contraception is required after 1 child, my ex had a IUD replaced every 3 years.
In the PH, where I live now, contraception is there for those who can afford it but not free to the poor who need it most. It is discouraged by the church.
Rich Chinese in the Philippines can afford to buy contraceptives and so they do. The RH Bill would allow the poor to have free contraceptives with education, the church is against it. But many Catholics use contraceptives anyway.
Over population is a myth created by the Globalist, created for several reason eugenics, UN Agenda 21, Chemtrails in the sky world wide.. you can fit every person in the Australia and still have land left over. The total area of Australia is 2,941,299 square miles.
There are 640 Acres per square mile
So if you multiply 2,941,299 x 640 the answer is 1,882,431,360 Acres
the world population in 2011 was 6,973,738,433 if you gave everyone a home on a normal sized lot, you would still have land left over in Australia.. over population is a Myth used to get you to buy into "green", global warming and New World Order.. Do your research before you spout off what you heard someone say, mainly the Main stream media...
I asked an opinion question, I didn't spout anything
Sorry ThompsosnPen that was more meant for the other commenter of your post. Not directed at you..
You are forgetting that on good land it takes several acres to support each person.
If you have any doubts about the effects of over population on the planet look at the plunging numbers of food stocks such as the 75% drop in fish in the ocean.
Great statistics. And Borsia -- several acres per person? Perhaps we can improve on those numbers through more skillful management. Plus we have the oceans to build our farms and cities on.
Borsia, if we fit everyone on The Planet in Australia, and i am not suggesting that we do, I am a freedom lover and fighter.. I We should live where we want. but that being said if everyone is in Australia, the rest of the world would be for food..
The rich elites of this world and their social engineers have already asked this question (behind closed doors) and determined the best course to take is to promote homosexuality and sponsor gay marriages. Abortion is working well for them, but they may have to dig a little deeper into their eugenics bag for something even more sinister.
Ted Turner (owner of WTBS, the Atlanta Hawks and Falcons) believes 90% of the world's population needs to die off. He, and his elitist/globalist friends, will live in a world where there is only about 500 million people still alive - just enough peasants left alive to serve their every need.
Sounds about right, but they're going to lose control of their machine.
Earth should be able to sustain several Trillion humans with the right, non-invasive management. Then we have Venus and Mars to terraform.
I am sure this planet can house triple the population we have now, but we need better resource management. I think the elitists think it will be easier to plan a mass kill-off of humans, than to effectively manage a growing population.
No, not at all.
This is a lie perpetrated by the New World Order crowd to allow them to test out their eugenics programs with some degree of indifference by those who would otherwise stop them. The Rockefellers and others have been at this since the early 20th century, even before the Rockefeller Foundation was created in 1913, the same years as the IRS, personal income taxes, and the private Federal Reserve Bank.
The Power Elite (Rothschilds, Rockefellers and about ten other families of the super rich) figure that they can manage only about 500 million slaves. They don't need any more. So, they intend to get rid of 6+ billion of us -- through war, Monsanto GMOs, disease and toxins in the vaccines (including mercury-based preservatives), and other joyous renditions of the 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse.
9/11 was a banner day for their plans. And now it appears that the evidence points to 9/11 being an inside job. Over 2000 scientists, engineers and architects have staked their reputations on supporting the evidence that proves this (http://www.AE911Truth.org).
Two years ago, I thought this kind of stuff sounded pretty crazy. My brother never could get me interested in looking. And then a friend hit me over the head with it after I had lived outside the USA for several years. The Corporate Party media kool-aid had worn off by then.
Then, it struck me that many of the events in my lifetime remind me of the imagery in the Bible's Revelation. This starts with the re-birth of Israel (1948). This includes the fall of the Great Star named Chernobyl ("wormwood" in Ukrainian) which spread its pestilence across a third of the old world. And it includes the upcoming coup de gras -- the Rockefeller "wet dream" -- RFID microchips implanted in every citizen -- control, without which no one will be able to do any commerce (Revelation 13). One news network lauded that this would become a reality by 2017.
But Revelation says that the Beast (Rockefellers, et al) will lose control and humanity will stand on the precipice of extinction, saved only by intervention from on high.
The Rockefellers and their ilk use the Law of Attraction from the limited perspective of "scarcity and fear." They want all the power to themselves. So they quash all non-scarcity-based technologies.

Good stuff, Lonestar. The Rockefellers own the American Medical Association, and are the financeers of the after morning abortion pill. They are worth 12 Trillion dollars, while the Rothschilds are worth 100 trillion, though some think it's more.
I agree. We are not over populated. I know lots of people that own acres of land and I assume they are not the only ones either. There is so much undeveloped land on this planet. Most of the so called "shortages" are man made to keep prices up.
I do not think so, the only think we do that do not allow spammers in hubpages
