I think that the phrase is - do unto others as you would have them do unto you - I believe that it is possibly from the Holy Bible.

It was around long before the old testament and long before monotheism it appears in various forms in the earliest writings of philosophy from many cultures.

Mick is right. It is "“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them." Matthew 7:12 This is also called "The Golden rule."

Read "the Water babies" by Charles Kingsley. He uses the Golden Rule for his characters, Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid. A morality tale for Victorian youngsters.

Funnily enough, I'm not religious, and I don't even have as big a grasp on the Bible as I'd like - but I found the answer within seconds.

Assumptions that you think that the Hubber is wrong in his question - just make an ass out of you and me. Assuming he meant the "Golden Rule" as it is commonly written - Do unto others etc...meant you didn't learn anything, or even research things.  Here goes:

Samson and the Phillistines say "Do to others as they have already done to you." - in response to God's "Do unto others" rule. It is not saying that Samson is right, but he did say it. Judges 15:10.

What is the origin: "The Old Testament judge Samson articulated the opposite principle, which we might call “the Leaden Rule.” His rule plays an important role in modern game theory, and illustrates an important difference between biblical and modern thought." (thanks to http://cyber-chapel.org/blog/the-golden … t-for-tat/  OHHH and the Bible for providing the answer!)

    See, Google is great.

I am pretty sure the idea comes from the Bible and from advice that Jesus gave but I am not sure of the exact scriptures to tell you his words.
