How to introduce two stranger cats to each other?

We have a cat that is more friendly to humans than to its kind. Today, we took a very mild/tamed cat on the street with us. When we introduced this new cat to our cat, our cat makes a growling sound and she really doesn't like the idea of having another cat although she was with two cats before (both died) when she was young. What to do? Any ideas?

I've tried that before, and it definitely didn't work out at first.  I had one cat trying to be friendly while the stranger cat was acting like a demon.  The one would sniff and approach, while the other would growl and swing its claws with fury like Bruce Lee in cat form.  This type of stuff can take time, when dealing with cats with personalities on the opposite ends of the spectrum, but over time, they will usually work out their differences.  Sometimes, even with humans, they become best friends after a good fight.  However, it is your call...  Hey, if you are going to have a cage match, can you at least film it so we can watch?  Ha!  Just kidding...

Ha ha...your cat must have seen all Bruce's movies to act that way. Anyway, I really hope that they'll become friends. This new cat is really very mild and meek. Just doesn't fight back. Guess he knows who's the boss...lol!

Hi There, I think I can offer you some help on this as not only have I worked in various Vet's surgeries, but I have also been through exactly what you are describing many times. I wrote a hub on the subject some time back and it should solve your problems:

I have heard people who have many cats say that they have introduced new cats to the home (or introduced two stranger cats) by crating them both in seperate crates and placing the crates front to front.  This allows the cats to feel safe while still able to sniff each other out.

Also, given that your cat has outlived two others and has been "only cat in the home", she probably feels that she has earned the top rank of cats in the home.  The new cat probably knows this and will likely submit.   The growling and fuss is just cat talk for "im in charge here" .  Granted there may be some hissing and even slapping if the other cat annoys her, but thats just how cats are.  Animals are different from humans in that they have a ranking system which is determined by power.. They will not kill each other, but they ay scuffle often (at least at first).

In short, I wouldn't worry-just let them work it out.

Top rank, huh! Most probably...and I just hope she realizes soon that nobody else wants to take  that rank away from her. She's really upset and angry with us also...didn't purr last night! Whew!

When I brought home a new kitten my old cat hated it she would growl, and slap at it so I sit them both down beside me, and played with both of them, and let my old cat know that I wasn't replacing her, there was just a new member to the house. As time went on she begin to play with the kitten, and now they are best friends. She still likes her space though, but it just takes time your cat will lighten up to the new kitten.

I tried that, too last night. I made them sit together in one chair. The new cat was just silent and meek while our cat sniffed and hissed and growled. She really doesn't like the idea of having a new cat but I think it really takes time, if ever!

I am not going to be much help because whenever I am in that situation I let somebody else stay with the animals until they get along lol.. I am always a chicken and think that one animal will kill the other. I just had to answer when I read your question because I laughed at myself.

Is it? You're good at the "easy" parts then...Nobody else here except my husband and I so we have to do our best in this.

    Astrairose,

Once on a show called "My Cat From Hell, " the cat therapy guy put up a screen door inside his house and separated the two cats. They could see each other and sniff as much as they wanted. Then he started feeding them on both sides of the door at the same time. Eventually he let them roam together. He started though by feeding them side by side in the same room. They became friends. This guy also advocated playing with your cats with all kinds of cat toys.

The therapy guy really made it looked so easy, Lisa. Effective ways though. From what all of you are saying it seems like cats will eventually be fond of each other given the exposure. As of now, our first cat's started to open up to the new cat.
