To test his obedience. If Abraham would follow this command - to sacrifice the son he had waited so long for - then he would follow any command.
God wanted to test Abraham for how much he loves God. To test his willingness to obey God's commands no matter what it would cost him. You see, Isaac, being his heir, the son that God had promised him, that he waited for so long, is Abraham's most valuable treasure. God knows it very well and by commanding Abraham to sacrifice his son, He gave him the ultimate test of faith and obedience.
I suggest you read further. Then you will see a bigger picture of God's purpose for giving Abraham such a difficult command.
I think it's a lesson for us all not to become attached to the things of this world.
Abraham had become attached to his son.
But God realizes that these bodies are only temporary. His true children are immortal and need to let go of temporary things.
He didn't.
What all the other answers neglect is that if God did it for any of the reasons suggested, then he loses his fundamental characteristics of being all good and powerful.
One of the bible's many, many flaws. It is one of the stories in the bible which actually disprove the rest of the bible.

Why did Abraham banish Ishmael (Genesis 21:14)?Jacob's sons even though they are born through the maid servants of Leah and Rachel got the right to be called Jacob's sons and become the patriarchs. Then why did Ishmael refused to inherit the blessings promised to Abraham?

Okay, most people know the story."1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And He said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there...
