Why is there such discrepancy among Bible translations as to which words should be translated Hell?
Some translations translate word for word (as much as possible seeing as some words do not translate) and some translations translate thought for thought. This is why I am a fan of the Lexham English Bible (Most word for word) and the Greek interlinear.
Biblegateway.com is also a great resource when it comes to such discrepancies.
If hell remains a mystery by lack of consensus it remains more terrifying and fearful. Man fears unknown like darkness more than pain. Think of the horrors of ignorance, it is even more so with hell.
If you can quantify it and qualify it, it holds no mystery and through understanding fear is lost. Resignation replaces fear. Hope is not a motivator, pain seldom is, but fear pushes man toward reconciliation against fear.
If we are clear on what this "place" of hell is, hell will win because it can be made rational and understandable and therefor not a prison of the mind.
Man can not settle on the vagueness of hell lest hell loses it's fear factor.
Men fear death as children fear to go in the dark; and as that natural fear in children is increased with tales, so is it for men.

Christians -- Leaving Hell out of the picture entirely, I wonder if you can tell me why I should be a Christian. Can you? I mean, here's your chance to convert me. But since fear is not a good enough reason for me, I need you to give me some other reason to be a Christian. How can your religion...

My personal opinion is that, YES, most Christians believe in God out of fear. And that starts when they are children. When a child is taken to church and told that he/she will burn eternally in the fiery pits of hell unless they follow the rules of the Bible and God's word, that...
