Try to recall each and everything you did on the day right from the time you woke up. Try recalling everything everything in minute detail. By the time you apply your mind in doing this, after a while you will feel tired and go to sleep immediately.

Wear yourself out during the day. Force yourself to take up physical activity - running, swimming, weight lifting. Try and stay active and moving throughout the day.

Also, try meditating. It used to take me hours to fall asleep, because I'd simply sit there and think, think about everything. When you can control your thoughts, and simply think of nothing - just 'be' - it's much easier to sleep (and to live!).

Don't take medication - do it for yourself.

Insomnia is one of the worse things!  I have insomnia really bad and will be up for a week at a time then am so exhausted fall asleep.  Unfortunately, my sleep isn't refreshing.  I drink camomile tea, read a little and when I finally turn out the light I try reciting in my head "Now I lay me down to sleep".  Sometimes it works and most times it doesn't.  You can always take over the counter benedril as that will make you sleepy and is not habit forming.

I hate it when I cannot sleep. Normally it's because I am thinking too much some problems I am having or just something that happened during the day. For me it helps if I try to meditate in bed. So I just let all the thoughts go and if they try to come back I just acknowledge them and let them go again.

Reading a book or magazines, watching TV  will help you divert your consciousness that you are insomniac. You will just gradually feel like yawning or falling asleep. smile It works for me!
