What does it take to be a man?

Many cultures have different ideas of what a man's role should be, or what qualities he should possess, what qualities or abilities do you believe make a man a man?

maybe for me a real man is respectful and brave. There are lots of views depending on the society standards. A real man is someone who loves a single woman and without playing all around.

Another good answer! Real men don't fall victim to temptation and adultery. Facing that takes a certain amount of courage, respect, and self-control.

Maturity and the understanding that he is not perfect as well as realizing that being a real man carries certain responsibilities that he will have to figure out for himself.

I will definitely agree to that! A man must know wrong from right. He must be responsible as well. Good answer!

What does it take to be a man? Well, I always thought that a man must have XY sex chromosomes. By the way, has anyone seen a man with XX gonosomes or a woman with XY gonosomes? Okay, okay... this is just a tongue-in-cheek reply.

My husband would probably be able to offer a better answer than I can, but he has offered an exceptional example of what a man should be. He loves the Godfather quote, "Women and children can afford to be careless; men cannot." And he lives by it. He fills the role of the true leader in the family, giving consideration to everyone else's needs before his own and treating us all with respect. Though I am the "bread-winner," and we make all decisions jointly, he is often the driving force to make things happen so we can reach our goals as a family. He doesn't get hung up on who does what, he's only concerned that the family has what it needs, and has his protection if anyone threatens those needs.

It takes XY chromosomes to make a male, but it takes a lot more than that and a certain number of years to make a man. Someone who is self-absorbed and unconcerned with the needs of his children or partner is not yet a man. Someone who is unwilling to do whatever it takes to provide for those he loves is not yet a man. And I'll have to echo Larry here -- it's also accepting that you're not perfect. Anyone who thinks they have it all figured out can never improve, and is also likely to never ask for help.

This is a perfect answer and exactly what I was hoping to see. You are definitely very lucky to be married to someone like that. A real man will put his family's needs before his own. I wish you both many happy years together.

The ability to humble themselves. To admit when they have made a mistake. To be considerate of others feelings and to put the feelings of their wife and children before their own. To be driven but not step on their loved ones to get there. To say I love you and know what that means. To show their softer side and be able to laugh at themselves. To want to improve themselves for the betterment of the family not just for themselves. To be honest and trustworthy and above all honorable.

A man should take responsibilities for his action when he make a decision he should live with the consequences, he should be there for his children and should treat them as well because they are Gods gifts.A Man should treat his wife or Girlfriend with respect they should not abuse or mistreat their better halve or any other woman for that matter. A man work hard for his money he doesn't settle for handouts and charity . A man do not gossip in swahili we usually say "wacha kama mwanamke " which translate into dont be a gossiper like a woman . That what it takes to be a man

A good set of ideals for a man, although I do find that last bit a little sexist. Women aren't the only ones who gossip. Other than that, good answer.

In short: Man needs to take responsibility for their actions and their life - he needs to  be honest to himself and others, be enthusiastic and shouldn't be ashamed to be gentle when is's time for it.

Accountability is another great quality. He must be willing to accept responsibility for his actions. There should never be a reason to feel ashamed for being gentle. Great answer!

A man makes mistakes, he learns from those mistakes and he passes on that knowledge so that others do not have to suffer the same pain for that knowledge.  A man learns daily that he can always be a better man.  A man cherishes his relationships and fights fairly to keep them.  A man knows pain, and how to take that pain and turn it into something that can help others.  A man knows when he has lost and bows out respectfully.  A man does not stand for abuse of any kind.
A man hurts for others even those to sick to hurt for themselves.  A man will stand alone when he has to and seeks out support when he needs to.  A man is tired at the end of the day from simply being himself.  A man always walks with his head held high knowing he made the best decisions he could in his situation.
A man controls his destiny by his choices, by those he chooses to surround himself with and by his determination to do the right thing.

Great answer jnb! Passing on what he knows and standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves are definitely great qualities for a man. He must be proud but not so proud as to be condescending. He understands that he controls his own fate
