"True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper, "You Are So Beautiful"  (written by Dennis Wilson and Billy Preston, made famous by Joe Cocker), "Beautiful in My Eyes" by Joshua Kadison....those come to mind first. Lovely question, Michelle! :-) ~Lurana

Bruce Cockburn's "Radiance," from his 31st and latest album, "Small Source Of Comfort" (2011.)

You can read about them here:

    http://cockburnproject.net/songs&music/r.html  ("Radiance")
    http://cockburnproject.net/albums/small … mfort.html  ("Small Source Of Comfort")

For those who don't know Bruce Cockburn (pronounce the last name 'Coburn'), he's a veteran Canadian folk-rocker and certified guitar wizard.

"Certified guitar wizard?"  Yeah, see his 1994 cover appearance in Acoustic Guitar:

He's a fantastic artist who deserves to be much better known than he is.  And "Radiance" has a bittersweet, luminous, otherworldly quality that for me, *is* beauty--one sort, at least.

The first song that I thought of was "Michelle" by the Beatles. Paul sings it with such conviction that it seems to be about an actual girl friend though I don't know it it is or not.The few French words he uses make it more romantic.
Ray Charles's "America" is performed with such style. He seems very comfortable singing it making the listener feel that comfort.
Vintage Trouble's "Not Alright by Me" is a sad song about a different kind of beauty, like tragedy you can't look away from.
Bob Dylan's album "Blood on the Tracks" needs mentioning.

MIDGET......Your question made me think immediately, of a song I have always loved.  It actually makes me cry, when I hear it, yet gives me a sense of peace and happiness.  "It's a Wonderful World,"......sung originally by Louis Armstrong(Satchmo).....I believe this song was part of the sound track for the movie, "Good Morning Viet Nam."  "I see trees of green, red roses too,"...... For me, this song captures the true spirit of beauty.   Thanks for the question, Midget.

Songs are such a wonderful gift to experience true spirit of Beauty. A song can make anyone feel beautiful or take them to a beautiful place in their minds eye.
I very much admire songwriters ability to do this. Personally the human voice captures beauty and emotion for me. The Song of the siren - The version sang by Liz Frazer from the Cocteau Twins is a personal favourite

For me, even though not standardly a die hard fan of Celine Dion, I must say that  her song 'I'm Alive' captures that emotional high that encompasses the breadth of the spirit of beauty in full.

You reminded me of Celine Dion's song "My Heart Will Go On" from the movie Titanic.  That song always strikes a chord with me.

Hi Michelle, great question.  The first song that came to my mind was Disney's Circle of Life.  I also would say the Disney Pocahontas song: Colors of the Wind also speaks of the beauty of the earth and the spirit of being connected to all.

However, my number one, 'all time' favorite is:  Louis Armstrong's:  "It's a Wonderful World."  I've actually mentioned this to my children as one of the songs I want played at my funeral...just to remind everyone of the beauty of the world.  smile

Or the original, by Percy Sledge.  Such raw emotion in that one.

I was just thinking about this. For me it would have to be the Kirk Thatcher song written for the Star Trek IV movie under the band pseudonym "Edge of Etiquette." The song was called "I Hate You."

Oh, there are so many beautiful songs out there! It is hard to just choose one. But, I find for myself that the theme songs from movies, or Wii games, can be the most beautiful, capturing the 'true spirit of beauty'. For me, it would have to be the theme song from 'Legend of Zelda'.

Mozart, Chopin, they all created music which represented beauty. Classical and any violin if played well, can be quite beautiful too!

"I Will Always Love You," by Whitney Houston.  This is the only song she sings that resonates with me.  And this song makes the movie The Bodyguard unforgettable.  The song even makes me forget I never liked Whitney Houston.

This morning I am in a 'question everything' state of mind.

So my answer begins by questioning the question.

What is meant by the 'true spirit of beauty'?

Can such a thing be captured at all?

Are there essential distinctions between emotions and the true spirit of beauty?

The songs mentioned evoke emotions, yes?

As I see it, feelings are always there, as the sun is always shining. Feelings are part of who we are.

Emotions pass through. They are our response to stimuli.

Songs may stir my emotions, and I say, “Oh, how beautiful.”

But if I answer truly, no song can capture the true spirit of beauty any more than a cup held down in the current can capture the spirit of a river.
