I believe most people over 40 make friends at work, church, the gym, and through hobbies or classes where groups gather who have similar interest. One very common website is known as www.meetup.com . This site is international and contains groups who meet for countless reasons; meditation, youga, wine tasting, hiking, tennis, writing, dancing, scrap booking....etc Just about any hobby you could imagine there is a group and if there isn't one you can create your own group! They also have networking groups as well as singles groups.
People who do not have hobbies or participate in activities outside of work and family aren't likely to be in a postion make new friends. One has to get out! It's really that simple.

Sure I absolutely agree with your advice, people who don't go out of their houses can make friends only online, while people who have active social life can make friends everywhere.

I find that my friends from the past are not either around the same city I am from now or they have passed on. I am 50 years old and my friends are found at AA meetings I attend . They are spiritual friends and real friends. Good question though, because until I got involved in AA, at my age I really had no friends, except for drinking buddies. When this ended , I had to run with a new group to stay sober, and I am blessed with my new group of friends now. I think it all depends on what you do with your life whom your friends will be. Excellent question, as finding a women to date is still a challenge in this age bracket. Thank You

I'm glad you ended drinking, it's for the est. You are right, friends are people who have same interests with you, but they can't replace good old friends from your childhood.

Simply live; by living I mean pursue your interests. Most all interests have a social side (if you will) primarily because we are indeed a social animal (well, to be more precise mammal). start bringing out your personality, if you will your interpersonal intelligence that is, if you are not already a social mammal.
To activate this, simply pursue any interests you may have. If for some reason you do not have any; partake in learning some via classes, clubs...

If you are a Christian or just prefer good honest friends I would say church is best. It isn't a guarantee of course but compared to friends you might find other places you can be more sure of their characters. I always suggest it for people looking for someone to date. If I had to choose a date from either a bar or a church there would be no question. For people of any age really.

Thank you Jackie for your genuine and insightful advice, church is the most safe place to meet people i think.
