How old is too old for little boy to go to bathroom with mom in public restroom?

What age is it "safe" to let a little boy go to men's room by themselves in public?

I'd say five or six if they understand about not talking to strangers and such. But it also depends on where you're at. Someplace with fewer people, like a restaurant, it's easier to stand at the door and watch who goes in and out. When we took my nephew to the big NASCAR race, he was seven but there were no other guys with us. With the crush of people in the restrooms at one time, it would've been almost impossible for us to see if someone tried to sneak away with him so, whether the other women liked it or not, we took him in the women's restroom.

That's a great answer. My oldest son just turned 5 and I feel like he's still a little young to go by himself in public. Trying to check if I'm overprotective or if that's norm. Thanks for the reply.

My boys are 5 and 7. They are still innocent at this age, and Really do not grasp the meaning of "mean people". If my husband is not with me, they go into the Ladies room with me. I don't care who thinks what. I am not taking any chances with my children's lives. At what age will I stop? I dont know. Probably when I get rid of my own stranger anxiety. It is my right as a mother to protect my young, and yours too.

Awesome! I agree, they are still innocent and we have a responsibility to protect them. I haven't gotten any comments or strange looks (that I know of) just wanted to get other moms opinions.

My son is special needs.  He is 7.  We are out in public a lot because of all of his appointments.  When he doesn't need my help....if the bathroom is a single room with a locking door, he goes in by himself.  If it is a multi-stalled bathroom, he goes in by himself IF there aren't a lot of people.  If I don't feel safe with whomever is around, he goes in the women's room with me!  I have never encountered a problem with anyone but sometimes there are signs on doors that say boys can't use the women's bathroom after age 7.  I just ignore it because he needs help sometimes.  I certainly am not going in the men's room! LOL

Sounds very reasonable. This is one of the hard parts of raising a boy.
Thank you so much for your reply. smile

When my sons were little I aimed to find the kind of restroom that was for only one person at a time.   I'd look in and make sure nobody else was in there, and then I'd stand right outside the door while either son was in there.

Both of them felt uncomfortable about going in the ladies' room pretty young - like four - which is why I made it a point to find and/or know about those single-person restrooms.  Whenever we'd travel a little bit my husband was with us, so it wasn't an issue, the way it was when I'd be out with the children by myself.  It really wasn't all that hard to know or find those single-person restrooms.

In answer to your question, I really don't think public restrooms are safe for boys of any age.  School is one thing, but other multi-person rooms are another.   When my sons were old enough to be out with a friend I still hoped they'd follow my advice and look for a single-person restroom.  Places where it's all kids who use the room are one thing.  Places where men nobody knows from Adam may show up to use the room are another.

My thinking is that if a little boy is young enough to be out with his mother and for her to be thinking about whether he should use a public, many-person, restroom...   he's too young to use it.  He should be old enough that he wouldn't be prey to a child predator.

Oh wow! It has been along time since my son was a little boy! I believe that you can judge it on how well he is able to go to the bathroom by himself at home. If he doesn't have a problem at home, will probably be ok by himself in public. Because he is a little boy, remain by the bathroom door until comes out. Be careful with him.

    be blessed.....

Thank you for your answer! I agree, you can't just give an age you have to judge each child according to their ability/personality.

I think in this day of age it should not matter. Heck there are guys going in the woman's restroom because they feel more like a girl.Keep him safe, that is what matters. I took mine in with me as there never was a male figure abound long after people approved. You just keep being a careful MOMMY. Bless you.

I agree, we need to keep them safe and innocent as long as we can.
