Can you recommend some good dog shampoos? My dog has itchy skin, not due to fleas.
My dog seems to have very sensitive skin, and itches a lot during these summer months. I give her a bath with human shampoo, as that is all I have. It is making me think she has a problem with it, even though I rinse it out as good as I can. Any suggestions? She has horrible itching episodes, especially in the morning.
Hi my friend the shampoo i would try on your dog is Fresh & Clean medicated shampoo for dogs and it is made by Lambert Kay.It is made for dandruff, dermatitis and itching and dry skin.
If you dog is having hair loss to you might want to try a omega 3 supplement in his/her food that will help the hair loss and itching to.
My dogs have dry itchy skin and I use an oatmeal based dog shampoo. You may however want to talk to your vet first and make sure there's not something else going on with her. It's always best to talk to the vet first. He or she may need to give you a prescription shampoo. Good luck!
I've recently added EVO to their kibble and this has helped terrifically. About a tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil into their kibble 3 times a week. My dogs weigh 130 pounds each so may want to lesson the amount depending on their size.
That sounds like an excellent idea, with the extra virgin olive oil. Thank you!
If your dog has itchy skin the culprit is likely commercial dog food. The human shampoo is probably drying the skin out even more. You really should talk with your vet and also do some research of your own. Many vets are actually paid to promote commercial dog foods that can be very harmful to the health of your dog. Also the breed of dog plays a great part in the diet they should consume. Not all commercial dog foods are bad but if you can buy it from a grocery store it is likely horrible. Look at the ingredients. If meat is not the first ingredient then it's probably a bad dog food. Do some research on the issues caused by commercial foods and talk with your vet. Chances are you could solve the problem by switching diets. Another hubber here wrote a fairly informative hub on the topic. You can find her hub here mcstir.hubpages.com/hub/Does-your-Dog-have-a-Dog-Food-Allergy Also you can find a good bit of info on making your own natural shampoo for your dog here petcarerx.com/article/natural-and-homemade-shampoo-for-dogs/199. I've left out the wwws in hopes that HP won't pick up as spam. I am in no way affiliated with either of the links.
You could try using Dawn dish soap to wash your dog to get rid of any dry, flaking reside on her skin, followed by a dog shampoo. They have dog shampoos that will help with itching. You can add ground flax seed to your dog's food too.
Dogs can have mites that are invisible to us. I use flea prevention on my dogs every month which also controls mites.
Most likely caused by allergies (very common). What breed is it (more out of curiosity than answer to the question).
As for good shampoo, an oatmeal bath is the best for a dog's skin if allergies. There are some hypo-allergenic dog shampoos out there and that's where I would start. Mix the shampoo with some mushy cooked oatmeal at each bath (don't mix and store... bad idea). Bath your dog once a week and after a month, you should start to notice a difference and less itching.
If not, then take to the vet to verify the condition. Chances are the vet will give you something for the dog's allergies (if that's the case) and a good recommendation for shampoo.
If your dog is a Shar Pei, you're kinda SOL. It's not allergies or anything other than a trait of the breed.
