   Fundamentalists threaten their devotees to believe what they're told. You don't find fundamentalists in Europe; it's an American phenomena. I find it simple to believe that the Big Bang Theory is another way of saying God started it. Laws  of Science are part of the divine order of things, whether it's radioactive dating, transitional species, or the law of stratigraphy. Then there are those formulas from chemistry and physics, such as F=ma & PV=nRT. A big reason why we end up essentially importing scientists and engineering students for grad schools is because this isn't a science-friendly nation. You can see a weather forecast for 30% chance of scattered showers, and somebody will claim a lack of rain proves meterology is a fraud and only God knows the weather!

      She asked about Americans in general, not fundamentalists (and you're an English teacher!?). Only a very small percentage of the population could be called "fundamentalists."

      No, buddy...just pointing out that her question was aimed at Americans in general, not a small minority group. It's likely we have different definitions of "fundamentalist" too.

      Though those who call themselves "fundamentalists" may be few in number, Bohemiotx is right---Americans have a different view on most things than the rest of the world. Some of this is good, some of this is detrimental.

   Maybe because Darwin himself had doubts  due to the Cambrian period? Or maybe  because ALL the right mutations and none of the DESTRUCTIVE ones must happen at the same time by pure chance seems to unlike to happen even over a period of millions of years? Especially since all known mutations in animal and plant germ cells are neutral, harmful, or fatal. Or possibly its because evolution violates the second law of thermodynamics? Another reason people may not believe evolution is because it seems unlikely and unscientific that life can come from non-life. In the end it seems as if believing evolution just requires too much faith.

      The Cambrian witnessed an explosion of hard-shelled invertebrates, such as trilobites--much easier to get fossilized. The Pre-Cambrian was a time of soft-bodied jellyfish and worms; fossilization depends on an imprint in the sea floor.

      CA, maybe if you would approach the subject without your presuppositions, you find answers to the difficulties you mentioned. Science is always discovering new things and changing it's mind. In 100 years we will have much more info.

   Maybe because evolution is complete junk! Who could believe that mankind came from monkeys the earth is millions of years old? It's much more believeable that the Bible is totally true and God made it all in an instant. But you have to have faith to believe this. Faith does not need evidence. Unless you have faith your mind will be blind.
