Do employers always check your last place of employment before hiring you?
Not necessarily. It depends on how thorough they are when doing background checking. Although nowadays it's more common to be checked thoroughly with so much job competition out there.
We always did and we checked up all references given for the last 5 years or so.
At least in CA you as an employer are limited in what you can say when someone inquires about someone. As an example you can't say that you fired someone for stealing.
But there are ways around this by speaking in code. I can't say that I caught someone with their hand in the till but I can say that I would limit their access to resources, although that is bending the laws almost to the breaking point.
Of course I can also, and most often did, say that I wouldn't consider them for employment in the future. When asked why I would just say that the laws don't allow me to elaborate.
If you were fired for any serious reason it is better not to give that employer as reference.
People who are illegal get jobs in the US every year too. Employers break rules. There are exceptions to every rule. People get second chances, and third and fourth... Basically it depends on if you can influence people. If they like you, you're in.
There are exceptions to every rule. That doesn't mean that exceptions are the rule. If you lie on your resume or on your application and get hired you can be fired at any time without any other reason so you are putting yourself in a precarious spot.
They do if they are wise. It is a good idea to check with the employer to be sure there wasn't some problem that might affect the applicant's work in the new job.
No they don't. It depends on a lot of things. If they are having a tough time filling a position they may not. If they really like a person, they will bend the rules. Some actually don't even care about your past. People lie on their resumes all the time and still get hired. People can be influenced so nothing is eched in stone. Any rule can be overcome. When it comes to survival, people will say and do whatever it takes to get the job. Even if the employer checks, it's irrelevant. The employee has nothing to lose because somebody will always let them in.
I'm not sure where you are getting this. A lot of people are excluded due to a bad past. Most jobs with any security check a potential employee's past and many seemingly mundane jobs are checked to some degree. Lying is never a good idea.
It's called fudging a resume. It is reported that 78 percent of the people do it. I know people who have done it and they have been at the same jobs for over 7 years now. You are just unaware of it.
It happens and I am aware of it but every business owner that I know, and I know a lot, do check resumes and if there are any irregularities you won't get the job.
It does not work every time. But people do get back in the work force every day. Homemakers, ex cons, people who have never worked get in. So some employers do overlook the past. It has been said, With God all things are possible! A fact!

Washington state is an "AT WILL" state and most employers are under the assumption that they don't have to have a reason to fire an employee. One employer actually told me that he could fire a person because he didn't like the patch on her shirt! Because I was not at all...

List ways to STOP immigration to USA (aside from building an airtight dome) How would YOU limit it?No president or army has EVER prevented immigration to the USA (much to the detriment of the Native Indigenous People of this land). Trump's wall isn't going to stop drones, airplanes, hot air...

Why are employers asking such stupid questions in there Job Applications and generally requiring volumes of information for a $8 an hour job?
