How do you respond if someone says, I am only hurting myself, why should you care what I do?

I was at a school one time where a teenager said that (I'm only hurting myself, why should you care....").  I asked her teacher's permission to sit with her outside of the class.  We were told to go to the library where we talked for a bit.  I was a volunteer, there was no counselor.  Then an obnoxious woman came in the room demanding that the student go back to class and told me I was no longer welcome there.  (This was after I had permission to be there.)

So I left.  I gave the student my phone number and told her to call if she needed someone to talk to.

As soon as I got in my driveway, 15 minutes later, the state police were on the other line.  They told me that there was a problem at the school and they needed me to go back in and talk with them.  I was terrified!  Out of the goodness of my heart I volunteered and now I thought I was in trouble.  Probably that obnoxious woman.

Well, as it turned out, the student flipped out in the hallway after I left.  She slammed her fist against the wall, punched the obnoxious woman, and then ran and hid in a janitorial closet.  The state trooper said that I must have had a real talent for talking with students because I was the only person the girl would talk with.

I coaxed her gently to the ambulance waiting outside, rode on it with her to the hospital.  Then greeted her mother and explained everything.

    So that's how I respond!  big_smile

I would laugh at them. Just a soft scoff. Then ask why they are being so selfish. Most everyone had a favorite pet at a time. So ask if your pet was hurt, would you want to make them feel better by carefully watching them? If they still don't respond, explain the link of why people sometimes take the responsibility of others as their own. By harming themselves, they harm others psychologically.

We are all surrounding by people who love and care about us.  When people hurt themselves, they hurt the people who care about them.  Caring is not something you can turn off.
