   Love and hate are both emotions of passion.  Indifference (or apathy) is the complete lack of passion, so for me personally, I find indifference has the potential to be the most hurtful.  If someone hates you, you recognize that you are having a very real affect on their emotional state.  The same can be said of love.  Indifference, however, means that someone cares so little that there is no care at all, and therefore stands to reason that you have no affect on that person.  If it's someone you care about or are trying to have a conversation with, indifference is by far the most hurtful approach.

      I agree. It is awful feeling that you don't matter. Not mattering renders you helpless and there is no worse feeling than that. Thx

   I will say love. Hate is not a part of my vocabulary. Love can be the greatest thing that has ever happened in your life, or it can be your greatest sorrow. I feel it is definitely the strongest emotion.

      The strongest emotion isn't always the most hurting. You can love me to death or hate me to death. But not caring either way really hurts. I don't hate, but need to know it exists. That keeps me from taking love for granted and keeping it important.

   I think it depends on what comes first. For instance, I don't really care if a casual acquaintance is indifferent to me, and may be quite happy if a previously hateful person becomes indifferent. However, if indifference grows where there was once love, it's excruciatingly painful. I'd have to say indifference in this case, because it's even more painful than hate after love, because at least that indicates that there really was strong feeling there.

      You are so right. We want to react even if that reaction is wrong. You can't react to indifference which renders us helpless which leads to hopeless. Thank you for a very down to Earth point of view. I love it when people keep it real.

   I once heard a speaker say the opposite of love is not hate. It's indifference.
   If someone hates you they are still (emotionally) connected. Indifference would be having a person you once loved treat you like they never met you. I imagine indifference would hurt the most

   None of them hurt because they are only notions in ones mind. If you give it power, then it may hurt, otherwise not. All concepts are neutral until you give it meaning. If you are deprogrammed, detached,  nothing has any power to affect you because it has to come from your own mind, interpretation/feelings. You are the master of your world. It is your creation.    I totally agree with JThomp42  love can hurt you and love can be most powerful  to a person's life in sharing and caring but is also strong as hate.
