That's what I was thinking DDE. Saying "We are dating" seems to put more of an emphasis on a RELATIONSHIP whereas "We're going out" is a current, happening, having fun, not too serious sort of thing. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.

There's no difference, and both sayings are the same thing.

Are they? I have this distinct feeling that people use them in two separate ways. "We're dating" sounds more official - building towards an exclusive relationship. Whereas "We're going out" just sounds like you're hanging out and playing the field.

I agree with you Whitney. There is a difference and you nailed it on the head.

Thank you savvydating! It just seems that nowadays people use them interchangeably and I sit here thinking to myself "Wait, what? No no there's a DIFFERENCE! I feel it in me bones!"

"We're going out" indicates a (specific date/time) such as "We're going out (this) Saturday."  On the other hand if someone announces to friends, family or whomever; "Everyone here I want you to know that me and blah blah are dating" it means you are a "couple".
However if someone asks a person if they're seeing anyone (special) and they reply by saying; " I date." or  "I'm dating but there is no one special." what they're saying is they go out on dates from time to time with multiple people but have not found "the one" or they are not in a committed "exclusive/monogamous relationship" with anyone.
"Hanging out" just means you're either platonic friends or friends with benefits. However not many people over the age of 30 use the term "hanging out". Someone might say; "I see a couple of guys/girls but there is no one I'm serious about at the moment."  The term most often used in that scenario is "casual dating".

I definitely meant it toward being asked if that person is seeing anyone special and they respond with either/or. I see what you mean. I feel as if "We're dating" is this current world's "We're going steady".
