Would you loose weight if you did 5 minutes of cardio exercise 10 times a day?
I would think the amount of calories you burn would be comparable, but I don't know that you'd get all the heart-lung-blood pumping benefits that you would of a longer cardio work out.
Who the heck has the time to drop everything and exercise ten times a day, even if it's only five minutes each time?
That sounds like WAY more trouble than it's worth. Just sayin'.
Losing weight depends on a number of things. Two key variables are how many calories you eat and how many you burn. Doing more cardio will burn more calories then before, that doesn't mean it will be enough in relation to what you are eating.
If you really want to maximize calories burned, though, the 5 min, 10x a day routine doesn't seem like the best way to go about it. With only 5 minutes, you do not have time to warm-up, cool-down, or stretch, which means you either do a low intensity workout (like walking) which only burns modest calories or you do a high-intensity workout (e.g. running at a 10mph pace) and run the risk of shredding your muscles or injuring yourself.
If you have 50-60 minutes a day then do one 60 minute or two 30 minute routines with proper warm-ups, cool-downs and stretching and have the bulk of the routine be high-intensity.
If all you have are 5 min windows then go for it, just take care not not injure yourself. An hour of even light cardio can burn in the 200-300 calorie range.
Hi junkseller, thanks for that advise, when you put it like that it makes more sense. It seems the 1 hour workouts will have to continue as is.
Another thing to consider is that exercise is partly in your head. You need to be focused to be safe and get the most gain. With the 5 minute routine, I think you'd be distracted with what you were just doing and will again soon be doing.
No, you probably won't. Your body doesn't start burning calories until it is warmed up. It takes the average human being 15 minutes to get warm. With that in mind, you can kind of figure that it is a waste of time.
Remember, 80% of weight loss is food.
Best wishes.
BeachBody's ten minute exercise program works on a premise similar. Created by Tony Horton the creator of Power 90 and P90X based on 90 minute workouts are main staples with 10-Minute Trainer being #3. There are many ten minute cardio workouts on the net promoted as a product and many as Free shared programs too supporting that premise.
Some of those ten minute exercise routines are just fine, but they don't include the warm-up, cool-down, and stretching, which make the true time of the routine 20-30 minutes.
I would not lose weight if I did 5 minutes of cardio exercises 10 times a day but you might. My guess is that it would work for some people. If the cardio is intense then you could burn a lot of calories but your muscle weight should increase. Personally I think it would lose fat but not weight. However that is just a guess.
You could find out by doing it for a few days. When I did cardio to lose fat I could measure the difference every day. I gained a little weight but I lost the belly fat. If the routine is good you can do it and find your answer in a day or two. Just don't check your progress by weighing yourself unless you really care more about losing weight than fat.
When I exercise and lose fat my weight often stays the same or increases because my muscle weight increases.
