What are the 10 ways that working for the government via civil service whether it's
local/municipal,state, or federal is analologous to the welfare system?
People choose civil service because it is a guarantee of job security with its benefits. Civil service employees are seldom fired, even for unsatisfactory work performance. This means if an employee is unsatisfactory, he/she doesn't lose his/her job which is unfair to the more diligent employee. Employees can get away with things that they couldn't in private industry. Yes, civil service employees retire w/ enviable pensions. One can say that civil service employees have it MADE for the most part.
If they have a job and work for their paycheck and pension it in no way equates to the welfare system. Private industry could take some examples from civil service jobs - pay a living wage and provide good benefits, but most of them won't. They'll outsource, dodge taxes, and feel free to charge us more for their products built by slave labor overseas however. In no way does a civil service job mean one is not a good worker or is lazy. Stereotyping people as whole is rarely productive. There is a large pool of civil service jobs - if there are more "lazy" people working them, it's simply because there are more of those jobs, not because of the job description itself. Not all people who work govt. jobs get to behave like Congress! .
Your assumptions about civil service are really an unfair stereotype based on misinformation and sensationalized media stories. Since I've been employed with my local government I've seen 8+ people get fired out of a department of 185 employees (some for really small offenses). Public service is also not all that secure. We've gone through two rounds of layoffs in the past 5 years where we lost another 8 employees. My agency is no different then most of the other cities/counties in my area.
Working for the government is totally different than working for the private sector. You say employees can" get away with more things", but this is simply not true. Not only are government employees held to a higher standard, they are always being scrutinized by the media and the public. In addition to that, many of the things that private sector employees take for granted on a daily basis, are not acceptable for public employees working for a government.
You've also been misinformed about pay. While it is true that employee benefits packages are usually pretty good, salaries typically aren't even close to what an equivalent private sector job would be (that's on a job for job basis). Here's a link to a article about the salaries of a federal employees: http://www.federalnewsradio.com/520/308 … 34-percent
So to answer your question, no, Civil service is not analogous to the welfare system.
I worked in civil service for 26 years and I have SEEN such people. Goverment employees get away with things that they would be FIRED for in private industry. I can tell you stories.
Ive been in civil service for 10 years myself and have also seen my fair share of fireable offenses go unpunished as well. However i think things are changing as governments have to deal with more things like social media scrutiny and tighter budget
Right you are. I'm retired now and many ex co-workers are remarking that civil service have become MORE stringent in the last 3 years. Almost everything from work performance to time/attendance are being more scrutinized. Times are hard.

“Poverty is caused by Private Monopoly. That is the present system. They have monopolized everything that it is possible to monopolize; they have got the whole earth, the minerals in the earth and the streams that water the earth.
