Is sin relative or absolute?
Someone was trying to defend a pastor of a well known church so he asked, Is sin relative or absolute? what is the difference between having sex before one gets married and adultery?
Sin is absolute. There is no difference in having sex before marriage and adultery--both are seen as sins against God. Sins don't weigh against each other. Sin is sin.
Sin is sin, we all agree but one being heavier than the other before God is what we do not know. It is a sin to steal something to eat just because you are hungry or lie like Peter did then it is a sin to kill an innocent helpless child yet the weig
There is no doubt that sin is sin. However, we also know that what may be sin in one religious setting may not be considered sin in another religious setting yet some things are generally known to be wrong no matter the setting it occurs. The person who asked the question knows that both are sin but his arugment is that why should marriages end because of adultery when people play with sex.
It is easier as a human to measure sin as absolute. There are many things to consider when measuring sin. Intentions play a major role and no one knows your real intentions apart from God. State of mind is another; a man in depression would act differently if he was not engulfed by depression. What if that person had an effect of witchcraft over them at the time? We do not have the measuring tools or the capacity to understand the complexities of measuring the true weight of a sin, but God does. Therefore I believe sin is relative in any circumstance.
It can't be a sin to have sex before marriage, because if you go back in history far enough people didn't get married..Because marriage didn't exist, & it was invented by man not god..What i think god would have said regarding sex before marriage, is to is not have sex before you fall in love with each other..The falling in real love is the real marriage, where two soul mates meet.
What point did marriage come into existence?
Ecclesiastes 7:20 (KJV)
"For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not."
That pretty much states everyone is a sinner whether they're a pastor or not. According to the bible both pre-marital sex and adultery would be considered sins.
However everyone tends to "cherry pick" which sins they'll avoid and which ones they'll partake in.
It was a sin when King David had Bathsheba's husband killed after he got her pregnant so he could have her. Everyone sins!
Matt 5:28 (KJV)
"But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath (committed adultery) with her (already) in his heart."
It means we all are sinners so no matter the sin we just have to pray daily for forgiveness. It has to be daily because we are all sinners so why pray and sin again?
davidkaluge,
Why bother getting out of bed if you know you're going to die?
Life is a learning process. We'll never achieve "world peace" but maybe in our striving to have it we'll improve our lives along the way. I don't pray for forgiveness.
Depends on who is telling someone off for a sin usually. whether it is treated as "absolute" or "relative"
If they are talking about the sin of another - then that sin is much greater and graver, than a "lesser" sin they (the chastiser) may have committed. If they are being told they are sinners - "oh, but you've (add sin here) too...your sin is just as great as mine".
Even though all sins are equal and all.
So, if you are doing the telling off - they're absolute, but if you're being told off they're relative....
"Oh, but my sin of wearing mixed fibers is nowhere near your sin of homosexuality..." etc. To the chastiser - wearing mixed fibres to them is not as much of an afront to God as being gay apparently is....but to the 'chastised' - if things were taken as written, then their sin of homosexuality is just the same as the mixing of fibres...something we all do...EVERY day. (Polycotton blend....check your underwear)
Interesting thoughts though - I'm reading "The Year of Living Biblically" - by A.J Jacobs......and the man is trying to follow the rules of both the OT and the NT literally...has stoned an adulterer (well, pebbled...but the idea was there) etc, so this question finally had an answer from me!
You mean who is telling off changes the meaning or weight of sin?
Only to the person doing the telling off. To God they're all absolute but some of his followers seem to make them relative by assuming their sins are lesser than those of whom they are judging. Just my opinion though

Why sex before marriage is important to men now-a-days?Has the sacred value of keeping oneself pure until marriage no longer stand?

I am a young adult and am disheartened to see so many of my generation engage in pre-marital sex, especially Christians. It has become so rampant that people disregard that aspect of the religion as if it were not important. When one is a Christian, he or she should be a Christian in...

Is it worth it to have sex?Everyone pretty much has sex before marriage these days and some don't even get married at all and it seems to be a trend that's wildly acceptable, but what happens to those who cannot see themselves doing neither of those things!
