   Why do people say that friends are the family we chose? Do you agree or disagree with this idea?

   It is very simple, have you ever heard birds of the same feather....
   Well it is simple thought that leads to everything. We always wish for the friends we want. Our sub-conscious mind is constantly working on the same  and chooses accordingly.
   Over a period of time the dependency on our friends is so high that they are they are everything for us, it is more like family and hence it is said so friends are the family we chose.
   But one thing we need to understand is who is an acquaintance and who is a friend. A acquaintance maybe close enough to know a lot things about us and vice versa but may not be a friend.
   Once this difference is made you will be in a better position to agree.

   It's because no one gets to choose their own family. You're born into it. In fact a lot of people would never have associated with members of their family if they hadn't been related to them in the first place!
   Relationships with friends come about through pure (choice). Our platonic friends become like our siblings from a different mother/father. I agree with the statement!

      deecoleworld, It depends on one's definition of a "friend" and how close they are to them. When I lived in California me & my friends celebrated holidays together, partied, shared dreams, loaned money, Best man at weddings, Godfather to children

   I understand the phrase but I don't know if I agree with! We are tied to family by blood and obligation. We aren't bind to our friends; technically there is nothing to hold us to our friends except choice. Friends come and go, family will always be there (even if they are shitty and we don't get along with them) and you can't deny that fact. How can friends be the family we choose? That is a bit unfair to put friends and family in the same category when they are completely different relationships!!!

      You said:"there is nothing to hold us to our friends except (choice)." Maybe one may feel (stuck with crappy family members) or "obligated" but {if} they weren't "family" (you would NOT choose) to be with them! The quote acknowledges this truth!
