What did Jesus Christ mean in John 19:30 when He said "It is finished?"
Jesus was speaking Greek, using the perfect tense. The perfect tense in Greek, as in many languages, refers to an action that was begun in the past but has reached its conclusion in the present.
Jesus was referring to the work and the plan of salvation for humanity. That plan was begun at creation itself, according to Revelation 13:8, and concluded with the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross. Jesus' death paid the price for all of humanity's sins.
Thanks Porshadoxus for your comments. While I have heard interesting responses to this question, Jesus did fulfill God's plan of salvation for us sinners giving us hope that Satan can and was defeated.
The what was finished on the cross was the desire Jesus had to embrace his Father’s plan of redeeming love. It is the motivating inspiration of Jesus’ entire life. We know this because he mentioned in John's gospel that this was the very reason for his Incarnation.
In the Garden prayer, Jesus prays, “And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, for this purpose I have come to this hour.” And again, “Shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?” So when he was on the cross, just before saying “It is finished,” he said, “I thirst.”
When Jesus said "It is finished" it not only means the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophesying our messiah has indeed come, the Word, our God in flesh, but it also means that what Jesus was sent to do was complete - He brought us salvation, grace, tore the veil, brought us the Holy Spirit, true freedom in the Spirit, healing, and much more.
The shedding of His blood is most significant here. It represents, in the most whole sense, our protection against darkness, God's faithfulness to His children, our redemption and victory, freedom, our spiritual identity in the Lord, the anointing, it defines the Lord's purpose and ours in Him, consecration, and the fact of being saved we are now part of the royal lineage of Jesus Christ.
"It is finished" completes not only the purposes for which God's only begotten Son was sent into the world, but also completes us spiritually in every way - the final piece for our spiritual freedom in every literal sense of the Lord's Word and Promises for all His children.
God bless you.
Jesus stated His purpose for coming early on as does scripture. He came to FULFILL THE LAW thereby doing way with it, completing it so it is finished. He was saying the Law of Moses is Finished and now comes the new covenant as promised to Abraham.
And yet the fulfilling of the LAW was only possible by his obedience/righteousness as opposed to his wickedness
your ridiculous comment makes no sense at all.
really? How did Jesus fulfill the Law? Was he a sinner breaking it or obedient to what it required? Sounds more rational than your reply.

Christians, If you sin and die 5 minutes later do you go to hell?So if you don't have time to ask for your forgiveness do you go to hell? Can your God forgive you and accept you into heaven even if you didn't get a chance to ask for him to forgive?

Can only Christians and those who accept Jesus Christ go to heaven?According to Christianity, only those who have openly accepted Jesus Christ and the Christian faith may go to heaven. If that is the case, what about the African tribe who has never heard of of Jesus? Even if they are good people,...

...when Jesus clearly said 'My Father is Greater than I' in John 14:28?Nothing can be greater than God, so by Jesus' own words, we can deduce that Jesus did not profess to be God, because he professes that there is a power Greater than him (Jesus). Why then do many Christians firmly believe that...
