What are your best ideas for shelf placement in a kid's room?

I'm decorating my kids' rooms and I'm just not sure how to do their shelves...

Depending on how they are configured but I found that one up high where I can put special items, away from unsupervised little fingers.

For the rest, don't put above a bed or above an item of furniture they could use to climb up and potentially hurt themselves.

I used a horizontal shape like this:
    _____
    .....______
    _____

So some taller items can also go on the shelves. Keep away from head hitting height but maybe at a level they can use a small step to reach the bottom level.

Now, is there somewhere that meet all those requirements! hahhahahaaaa smile

Oh my goodness - Your question brought a smile to my face recalling good times of "my past life" smile  My former husband was an electrical engineer and safety of our little daughter was ALWAYS his main concern. ANY shelf or bookcase we had in the house was "bolted" to the wall with "L" brackets that were screwed onto the bookcase and then onto the wall.  (And we lived in Minnesota, for goodness sake, a place where an earthquake was unlikely).  Ironically, he left our little family, which was more devastating than any shelves falling on anyone's head.  But, it IS a sweet memory of a time when things were very wonderful and it's all ok because time heals and we can smile and have a lovely memory from a sweet question. Cheers, Billie

Aww this is the sweetest hub comment I've ever received.  <3  I'm glad the question reminded you of such a happy time in your life.
