   What causes so many conservative, fanatical, fundamentalist, traditional, & zealous religionists
   
   to have negative feelings, even animosity towards atheists, agnostics & other spiritual freethinkers?

   I think people get the wrong understanding , as an example a great wedding may be planned ,and yet you are waiting for your invite ,many just may not be invited by invitation for some reason only known by the bride and the groom. In reality the bible is also our invite to be a spiritual citizens now and in the very near future.
   
   Yet people decline that invitation many ways. They reject the sender. They reject what he stands for ,and they reject his concerns, 
   
   Will he force any to accept Never!
   
   Reference Bible Mt 25:34 “Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, YOU who have been blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for YOUfrom the founding of the world. 
   
   
   He says come !. He invites. We can not invite ourself.

   Because everybody thinks they are right. They have had a few enlightening experiences, and then they want everybody to be like them. Also, their scriptures tell them to go out and recruit/convert  people. It will make the world a better place, (and bring them more cash) lol.

      Even though you find humor in the subject you speak some truth, but the difference is when you have the genuine truth money has no value. It did not when Jesus healed the sick and fed multitudes of people . He gave free. And he still is giving free!

   The answer is in the question. it is because they are conservative or fanatical or fundamentalist or traditional or zealous they have negative feelings toward atheists, agnostics and other spiritual free thinkers. Someone who is conservative might not necessarily take up arms against someone who is not but by implication they can hardly approve of them. Fundamentalism by its very definition must narrow a person's vision and point of view. Someone who is traditional might not necessarily be narrow in their thinking. It depends on the traditions they adhere to. Still many traditionalists don't care for agnostics and especially atheists. Zealous? This generally points to the notion of you are either for me and my beliefs or you are against me. No middle road possible.
   
   Free thinking has come under fire from a number of sources of late since those killings in France. Me? If the law says cartoonists can for the most part draw what they like in a particular country and writers can for the most part write what they like then it shouldn't be up to scum bag religious radicals with guns to say otherwise. Yet the Pope of all people has stated that he is on the side of those killers. Weird! Maybe he is still cheesed off at some of the cartoons in past issues of Charlie about Catholic Priests acting dishonorably toward children. As Monty Python might put it perhaps it is time for the SPANISH INQUISITION to make a comeback.

   I don't know any conservative, fanatical, fundamentalist, traditional and zealous religionists.
   
   Everybody I know is nice, whatever belief she or he may hold privately, and I have no problem getting along with almost all the folks I know, whether agnostic, atheist, practicing a religion or whatever.
   
   I do practice a religion, and so do many friends, but they all have a "live and let live" mindset, as I do. There's no need to prove anything.
   
   There is no need to go around preaching and lecturing. Just be nice, gracious and treat everybody the same as you would want to be treated yourself.
   
   I guess I'm just lucky to know such great people.

      Yes. You are most fortunate. You describe how it was growing up in Australia in the 1960s.
