   How did you choose a major in college?
   
   Was it job security? Did you follow your dreams? How many times did you change your mind?

   I was aware at a young age what I wanted to do with my life...I chose Medicine...I was a natural born healer ..it started in my childhood years due to living on my Grandparents dairy farm and working with the animals..thought perhaps Veterinarian ...decided in teen years( job security)....Medical School as Osteopathic Physician ( my dream and never gave thought to changing)
   Retired from the profession after 30 years
   Only one regret..if I had to do over I would have chosen Research and Development ...vs...Clinical practice...'
   interesting question.

   It was based upon odds of finding a job and it's "income potential".
   The cost of college has gotten too expensive just to be majoring in something that won't allow a student to repay college loans they may have acquired. Most companies these days are also looking for grads who have a degree that is related to their industry.
   Degrees in Art Appreciation, Poetry, or many other generic Liberal Arts do not garner the same respect. No, I didn't follow my "dreams" and I never changed my major from Business. I wish I had. School is probably easier when you're pursuing a degree in your dream major.
   Nevertheless the name of the game is (getting paid) after graduating

   I did what I enjoyed. I'm not someone that can excel when I'm doing something I don't like. I can't fake it. I've always been attracted the arts and social sciences so I dabbled a bit in a few different areas.
   
   I was a Philosophy major to start, switched to Psychology, then switched to English. I ended up going back to Psychology and that's been my area for the past six years. My minor switched a few times as well but I settled on an English minor.
   
   The job opportunities for someone with a BA in Psychology are virtually non-existent, but I knew that going in. I always knew that I was going to have to get at least a Masters degree and that was fine with me.
   
   I guess my thinking was that it would take a lot more time, money, and work to be successful in the subject I chose, but it was worth it to do something that I actually love.

   Sharp Points,
   I just thought about what I wanted to do and found the best path to get there. In my case it was Communication Arts. I now work as a writer and a voice actor.

   I needed to find a career that would be both satisfying and financially rewarding, so I did some research and came up with occupational therapy. It has proven to be both. However, I did not follow my dreams. Had I done so, I would have chosen creative writing.

   I wanted to be a marine biology, since I love mammals and the ocean. But when I failed Bio lab in college, I had to switch it to Liberal Arts, which was the closet major to writing, other than English.  I have an Associate's Degree though.
