How do you fix a heavy heart?

Several things happen in our lives that cause us to reflect upon our past. We make the same mistakes, often with people we love, that can give us a heavy heart. Grief and sadness are the main symptoms of this emotional condition, but how do you fix it.

Some people, including myself, just keep going day in and day out feeling this way. Not knowing how to not feel low. How do you coup with the knowledge that you made an ass out of yourself with a friend, or caused a conflict with family, or even just so much as regretted saying a joke.

Change your thoughts, change your life.
The world is an illusion and our perception of it is our reality.
A sheet of notebook paper and a $100 U.S. dollar bill are both sheets of paper! The only difference is we as a society have (agreed) to place more value on one sheet of paper versus another.
What makes January 1st more special than August 1st? It's the agreement we've made that January 1st begins a "new year" which means we put last year behind us and start with a clean slate. We also do this with months, weeks, and days.
We allow events to define time.
Whenever we have a heavy heart it is in part due to the fact that we have (chosen) to limit our perception of options available to us. Sometimes when we are feeling down we go out of our way to avoid "happy people" and sometimes we become upset when people attempt to cheer us up!
This would clearly suggest that in some way maintaining a heavy heart is a (decision) to not want to think about positive things at the time. Whatever we focus our mind on will determine how we feel!
Sometimes you have to forgive yourself and acknowledge your imperfections. People spend less time thinking about us then we realize. The world will keep turning with or without us.

    Eric, consider these thoughts:

    1.  Making an ass out of yourself is proof that you are human; we have all done it.

    2.  You feel low and heavy-hearted because you allow your human error to weigh you down; you need to get rid of the burden.

    3.  I can share some suggestions on how to lighten up, but ultimately it is your responsibility to act on them.

In fact, with your permission, I will like to answer your question in a hub.  Till then, take deep breaths and as you exhale, talk to yourself about the proofs there are that you still have value and purpose.

Provide it with laughter, pun-influence, and fun to inflate this temporary state of heaviness so it eventually forgets the great heaviness and is pumping free again...

There will be events in many of our lives where things do not go the way we hoped or planned.  There will be time when we feel foolish in front of others.  Many of us have regrets that we dwell on and that is why some of us walk around with a heavy heart.

Understand what the problem is is the first thing that is needed.  I you many have said or done something to harm another person, I would recommend seeking forgiveness from them.  This way you know the reality of the relationship.  If they love you thy will forgive you and let you move on.  Then you have to choose to move on and not dwell on the past.

What is done in the past is done.  Sorry, but there is nothing you could do about the past except try to make the present and the future better.  Keep that as a focus.

I am speaking from experience, I have made so many mistakes in life, but I keep praying and trying to focus on positive thoughts and caring for others, that lightens my heart.

Life is a test at every moment, Eric. I know what it is like to have heavy heart, sometimes you just have to lighten up.

I hope this helps, I wish you well.

Eric, the feelings are normal unless you can't shake them, and they occupy much of your mind. Never go it alone, there are help lines, counseling and always people willing to talk to you. There are many right here who I know would be glad to talk to you. You sound like you have a kind gentle heart, and those hearts hurt so easily. Talking through things with others helps.
