Parents on Facebook: Are they robbing children of their privacy before they even have a choice?
Parents today can't stop sharing photos of their kids on Facebook, from the first ultrasound picture through every birthday, achievement, graduation or even embarrassing accidents. But is that robbing their children of their right to privacy before they even have a choice of how they want to be represented online? Is that opening children up to identity theft, or even kidnapping by having so much personal information about them publicly accessible? Once something is online it's almost impossible to completely erase it. Or does no one have any real privacy anymore in today's electronic age?
I think nowadays, parents have to be careful. I warned my cousin not to put on Facebook when they go on holidays but she did not listen. When they went on holiday, her children's bikes and other things were stolen from her house. It is so easy to write any information on Facebook or any other social media but the whole world will know about it if we are not careful. Nowadays, I think technology helps but sometimes it puts us in danger if we are not careful. It also causes frictions between families, friends, colleagues and acquaintances because of postings which are not appropriate.
I think people are too willing to share things on Facebook that should remain private. I saw on social media once where a woman was telling the world her daughter was now a woman. She gave too many details. This is something that should not be put on social media. I think too many parents don't realize there is a line they should not cross.
Yes. Some parents do. They post photos of their baby bumps and infants. But of course, the guardianship is theirs so they are ultimately responsible for it.
I agree with you there. It makes me sad to see that even adults in their thirties and forties won't bat an eyelid to sharing pictures of their kids on Facebook constantly. You're absolutely right, it robs them of the choice of privacy.
I think parents do it because they see it as an easy way to quickly share their children's progress with their friends and family.
I actually wrote a Hub on what not to put on Facebook, with children pictures included:
