   What is the motive for ISIS to now be targeting France?
   
   I tend to steer away from the news, as there is hardly, if ever, anything good being reported. But I'm curious.

   The thing is, the targeting is not "now" but a longstanding conviction of this one and other groups like it, and it's not just France.  It's not in the typical news story, but their goals have been plainly stated.

   ISIS is an extremist group that wants a one world caliphate, meaning that they want everyone to convert to Islam or die.  They will attack anyone they feel is an infidel, or non-Muslim.  They can and will target anywhere.

   Stupidity would be the logical answer, but they wrap it up in political and religious rhetoric.
   
   Extremists usually have a one sided view of things, in their eyes, the whole world owes them, everything from respect to money.
   
   ISIS is not just targeting France, they are targeting anyone who does not think as they do.

   France is seen as a particularly viable target because of its involvement in the recent air strike campaign against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. In fact France is one of the leading opponents, striking over 1300 times in total. This has increased since the Charlie Ebdo attacks in January, by Islamic State terrorists.
   It has also played a key role in the recent Libya fiasco (together with the UK) and has troops in Mali fighting Islamic extremists.
   Plus, weaponry is far easier to buy on the black market in France than in other major European countries; and you could argue it has many disaffected young Muslims in the poorer parts of major cities who are willingly trained and brainwashed in Syria before returning fully prepared to France.
   Add all these up and throw in the fact that Islamic State is losing the battle on the ground in Iraq so therefore changing its tactics somewhat and you can see why the soft targets in Paris are so attractive to these barbaric terrorists.

      It all seems very ritualistic to me. They believe their acts are justifiable through some higher divine power. And ritual occurs when rational no longer exists.

   They're probably trying to strategically stir up more unrest and hate regarding the Syrian refugees fleeing from them. They want an all out war against the Western world and the more people become hostile towards ALL Muslims and refugees, the more justified they feel in their cause.

      Ditto. ISIS aren't dummies, even though many think so. They understand history and warfare. The attack could be perceived as strategic regarding stereotyping, prejudice, and raising fear in Europe. It has succeeded.

   I believe Islamic State have described France as a latter day Babylon which if you read your Bible was a place of sin.  So attacking France where everything is that they hate is no problem for them.
   
   Plus France is bombing them so it stands to reason IS would hit back.

      Precisely...ritual in the absence of rational. Whether you have an acquired religion or not, that should not be a factor that dictates your actions in life, and it certainly shouldn't be utilized as an excuse.
