Do you contend that we all are our brothers' keepers or do you believe that each person

sits on his/her bottom & is not responsible for others?

I believe that we all have a responsibility to contribute to our society. Sometimes, that contribution is working, or building a business and creating jobs. Sometimes, that contribution is paying taxes, to pay for programs that make the society better, stronger, or more equitable.

Even though I'm an uber-lefty liberal, I don't think we're all our brother's keeper. I do think we have a responsibility to give a helping hand to those who need it, and to ensure that all people have a roof over their heads, food to eat, access to health care and education. I don't believe in lifelong handouts, but I do believe in providing a hand up when necessary, so that all people can become contributing members of society, and nobody ends up sitting on their butt unless it's absolutely necesary.

That  doesn't sound so uber-lefty to me. I consider myself conservative, but agree about 98% with what you said here.

I personally do not believe that we are our brother's keeper in part because it's quite clear that a fairly large number of our brothers (and sisters) would unfortunately be quite happy to do and be nothing of substance in life. Another reason that I do not believe that we are our brother's keeper is that a significant number of people see this idea as meddling in their lives and reject it.

The last reason that I do not believe that we are our brother's keeper is the fact that many people take advantage of others and will do so repeatedly until the "help" is taken away. I do believe that we should help those who truly want to change their lives for the better, show some level of appreciation, desire to reciprocate in some way, and actually want the help you or your charity can offer whether it be your time, money, or presence.

EXCELLENTLY SAID, the MORE you help many people, the more they take advantage of you.  I believe that each tub sits on its own bottom.  People should learn to help themselves or .....DO WITHOUT.  There are so many moochers who refuse to do anything!
