   Access to assisted suicide is something some people genuinely want or even need, and at the same time, they don't inherently need to violate the rights of anyone else in order to get it. I think any desire that fits into this category should be legal, not just because people should be free to direct their own destinies when no one else is harmed, but also so that it can be regulated by law, preventing black-market entities from taking selfish advantage of the genuine needs of others.

   I think that assisted suicide should be legal. People should have the right to end their own lives when they are ready to.
   
   That being said, I think there should be come type of controls around it (counselling for example) to make sure that the person is truly making that decision of their own free will and they aren't being coerced or prematurely deciding on a permanent solution (death) to what might only be a temporary problem. (Example: If they decide they no longer want to live because the "love of their life" dumped them, it would be better for them to have a period of time to recover from that before taking drastic action.)
   
   In the end, we can all chose to take our own lives. Most people wouldn't need help to step off a high ledge or in front of a truck. Making it legal would protect innocent bystanders (the driver of the truck, for example), would help make sure the job is done right (no persistive vegetative states), and would inflict less trauma on next of kin or whoever finds the body.
   
   I recently had to take a loved family pet to the vet to be euthanized. It was a quick, dignified end to a long life that had turned too uncomfortable. It seems reasonable to have the ability to be as humane to a human.

   Yes. People should have the right to decide when to end their own lives, safely and humanely. They should not have to continue to suffer if they are in need of relief, whether it's from a terminal illness, or a prolonged condition for which there is no cure. They should have access to a medical professional who can ease them out of this life, after insuring that they are psychologically ready, and ending their life of their own accord, without pressure or coercion from anyone else.

   NO, Suicide should be legal, and the person assisting them should be held harmless. As long as it is the wish of the person that wants to die.
   
   I have seen old people in rehab facilities slowly being killed by doctors that just punch the clock. Many of these doctors are on the lowest rung of the profession.
   
   When the weekend comes, or holidays, the regular crew is gone and the subs come in to lose any ground made by the regulars. This is not quality of life for these patients, and they are kept alive, but will not survive. They become a billing posts for the doctors and the facility. But it is rare from what I have seen that they recuperate.
   
   Then there is the common trip back to the Hospital and ICU. Whatever progress is made there, disappears because they are sent back to rehab too fast.
   
   In fact, I would suggest that not only suicide be made legal for these people, their family should get a cut from the future savings that will go to the insurance company for ending their coverage of that patient.
   
   I think it should be included as a clause in a persons will, next to do not resuscitate.

   Having worked in nursing homes, I FULLY support Dr. Kervorkian!!!   Nursing homes are unethical; the longer the resident stays alive and suffers, the richer the facility gets.  That's the nicest thing I have to say.  I could say a lot more, but it isn't fit for the web.

      Oh, I am pretty honest.  I think that when I am real old, I would be thankful for people taking care of me.  I want to live as long as I can.

      LoliHey - if living in a nursing home is the price you wish to pay for a longer life, more power to you. I personally would not want to be dependent on those monsters who were my coworkers. As for money, they can drain all your assets for your care.

      I agree with Yoleen, and it is a ? of being kept alive, it is not being able to recover, and wind up dying after suffering for long periods. I have seen it first hand, many times. It is definitely not something people would choose to do,

   People should be able to decide their own final fate.  If a woman can get an abortion, then why not be able to end their own life?
