Do you believe that Russia is truthfully going to use cold war missiles to destroy asteroids?
Russia has stated they want to use missiles to destroy asteroids but some believe this is nothing more than a lie. What do you think about this?
It's most definitely a lie. As much as I respect Putin, I do not trust him.
How exciting! Mr. Putin must be watching old Will Smith movies.
Russia has a space program, and NASA had to pay them to get supplies and people to the International Space Station.
So if anyone could do it right now, it would be Russia.
If that is true, I'm all for it. if it is a lie, then they risk another world war.
I think that this should be a joint venture...
meaning I think America should be there to over see this.
That way, we will either have a bazillion marble sized asteroids, or we'll have WWIII.
Cold war missiles don't have nearly enough range to be effective against an asteroid. They're only made to get from one side of the planet to the other.
If an asteroid were on a collision course with Earth, the only thing an ICBM could do would be to reach the asteroid moments before it entered the atmosphere. Even if armed with a nuclear warhead, it wouldn't stop the asteroid from hitting the Earth. If anything, it might actually make the problem worse.
A rocket would have to get to the asteroid while it was still far enough away that it could slightly alter its course so it misses us. You'd need the right rocket ready to launch months (if not years) before the asteroid was expected to hit.
First of all, I wouldn't trust anything that Putin says. Keep in mind, this guy managed to steal a Superbowl Ring from the Patriots owner. And, he's done a lot worse than that, too.
Secondly, the idea of destroying asteroids with missiles may not be effective. In fact, it may make the situation a lot worse. The problem is that asteroids can be made up of different substances and be of different sizes. Some are merely a collection of rocks strewn together by gravitational pull. Blowing up means you will have hundreds more asteroids heading for Earth.
Scientists in Russia probably know that. Thus, he's probably using it as an excuse to deploy these missile (and I'm just using "probably" just on the outside chance that he is actually going to use these missiles for that -- After all, he is unhinged to some degree).

Our President offers an apology to countries we are not allied with, he does a 180 degree turn when he visits our Allies. Bare with us for now, Obama will no longer be President in a few short years.I hope you all stay safe in the meantime. Only G-D knows whom this man will help.

Is towing an asteroid to the moon a stupid idea?Scientists now want to capture an asteroid and tow it to the moon to put it into orbit. Along with the A-bomb, thalidomide, asbestos etc etc this has to rank as a really bad idea. We are constantly told about how dangerous asteroids are. What if...
