Would you rather be forced to tell your friend a lie or tell your parents the truth?

There are two adages that come to mind when I reflect on this question:  Honesty is the best policy; and the truth will set you free.  I appreciate the latter so much.  Telling the truth does not always feel good; knowing the truth does not always alleviate the pain, but it does free us to make better choices based on sound information.  If we lie in any regard, we are acting in ways that perpetuate harm toward others.  Regardless of the outcome, I cannot lie to a friend because then I am not really a friend to that person or to myself.  I also cannot lie to my parents--well, I've tried and it never went well.  The main reason is, if one of the worst things we can do to another is steal, when we lie, we are robbing that person of the truth, and compromising their--and our--integrity.

I like how you explained it ivorytusk. Telling the truth can be awkward or challenging . The truth as perceived is not always kind as much as we would like it to be. But freeing for both parties in the long run I feel.

I want to clear one thing friend and parent both are important but role different. We can tell all truth to our friends because they are the only person ready to accept our good and bad. Parents are having more responsibility so they can easily become worried about us. So sometimes though we are having hard times in life we won't tell that to our parents because they will worry about it lot. Everyone wants to make our parents happy but to friends we can share our hard times they will help us by supportive words or by action. Being honest is must but sometimes for our parents happiness we can hide few things because they can't bare our pain and they will take blame on themselves. Life wont be complete without parents and friends.

I appreciate what you write about seeing the role and friend as necessary but different.  I take my cues from Emily Dickinson:  Tell All the Truth But Tell it Slant.  We can say all the truth differently to different people in different roles.
