I am watching a debate happening in Britain about it leaving the European Union, or staying in it.

At one point one of the panelists said: "I live in the greatest country on Earth..." speaking about Britain and I thought: "I heard Canadian politicians say that". I also heard many politicians from the United States saying they live in the greatest country on the planet. So, we can't all be living in the greatest country on Earth - who's lying? Or, an even more important question in my opinion is: how does it help to state that You, or I live in the "greatest country in the world"? Is this not a bit like the children arguing at the playground that their dad is the strongest?

I think the issue here is losing the GB identity and being absorbed into the EU. GB is now like a state in the US, instead of an empire.

It would be like asking the US to form a North American Union of Canada, US and Mexico, maybe all the way down to Panama.

Of course every politician is going to say that the country they lead (or are trying to lead) is the best country on Earth.  Who wants someone to run their country who doesn't believe that (or at least pretend to)?  You want the person running your country to be proud of it and most people have some sort of national pride that that statement appeals to.

As for actually backing up the statement, well, you can look at studies and surveys relating to happiness, quality of life, crime rates, etc. and see the same 10 or so countries on the top of each of those lists.  But those criteria might not be everyone's definition of what makes a country the best country, so yes, it's highly subjective.  I live in Canada and while I am definitely proud of my country and think it's ONE of the best, I don't think I could say it's THE best.  For me that would probably be one of the Scandinavian countries.  But, again, my criteria is probably much different than someone else's.  There are lots of people who whole-heartedly believe that the US is the best country in the world and I wouldn't live there if you paid me to.  Different strokes for different folks!

Thank You for your answer. I also live in Canada and think it is an amazing country but I was born and raised in Romania and I think that is also an amazing country. So, I don't have a "greatest country". Both citizenships I have I am grateful for.

I believe it's called National Pride. Hopefully everyone believes in their country like that.

Thank You for your answer. I hold dual citizenship so, I don't have a "best country".

Hello Mr Happy, there are many issues, but for me, I still want out to defend democracy/sovereignty.  Once that starts to go (and I believe it already has) everything else goes eventually.  Nice to see you're still going strong BTW.  All the best.

Democracy is a good value to protect and Brussels needs serious reforming but I am not getting into that now lol Thank You for your answer.  Cheers! : )
