Isn't it very perplexing to the point of being totally flabberglasting that some young Americans

don't know what World War II was, why was it fought, who were the Allied & Axis Nations, & what countries were instrumental in winning World War II?  There was a question polling in Times Square, New York recently which asked young Americans from 18-30 about World War II, not one of them know what World War II was, what the Allied & Axis nations were, & what countries were instrumental in winning World War II.  Now, I KNOW that we are in .......KNEE DEEP.....

EXACTLY, they know more about vapid celebrities than very important historical events.  It is abysmally sad if you ask me.

This is terrible. How is that possible? What exactly are they teaching children over there now?

I live in the UK and not only do school-age children know about WWII, they are also involved in the memorials honouring those who fought in WWI.

Probably because Europe lost around a quarter to a third of its young men in both wars, so it has a much greater residual memory. A Queen who lived through WW2 helps, too.

Every child SHOULD KNOW about World War II.  C'mon now....this is beyond inexcusable.  I knew about World War II & the holocaust in the 5th grade.  What is wrong w/Americans these days?  Learn & READ- these concepts AREN'T foreign you know!

It goes much deeper than that.Bill Oriely(I Know) does a segment of 'man on the street' asking random people questions; One guy couldn't come up with where KFC is from;Another thought Africa was a country; One lady asked to name a country starting with "U" said Utopia...
Americans, just gotta love em...or they bomb your country...if they can find it on a map...if not they bomb your neighbor...everybody eventually gets a turn...

It's so sad!  Maybe because they are not paying attention in school, and the parents aren't supporting the teachers.  No one cares about their education anymore.

Thank you Common Core, where teaching of American history starts with the Great Depression while lying that socialism saved us from it, glossing over the World Wars and focusing on very minor characters in the name of diversity. For example, Harvey Milk as a homosexual man and a black girl who supposedly ran a ride like Paul Revere - but doesn't talk much about the Founding Fathers except to demonize them as hypocrites.
And that's aside from guilt-tripping modern whites for slavery, which was an institution in nearly every human society (even predating agriculture, per the Bible), ignoring the 600,000 whites dead in the Civil War to end it, the ONLY nation in human history to fight a war to end slavery for a people that wasn't its own.

It's because history classes work from the oldest history toward the most current history. So you learn about Columbus, to the Pilgrims, then to the revolutionary war. Students are lucky if they make it to WWI.

I know I didn't learn anything beyond WWI. It sucks.

I'm just as flabbergasted that many older Americans don't know the difference between the Civil War and the Revolutionary War.
