   What was YOUR reaction when you saw THE EXORCIST movie ?  Did it SCARE you?  Did it
   
   cause NIGHTMARES?   Or did you just LAUGH it off, even being totally nonchalant about the movie?

   By the time the movie came out I had already read the book so I knew the story going in. It didn't scare me but it made me uneasy. I thought they did a good job of building the tension to the climax but it didn't have the same impact that the book did. I didn't have nightmares over either one but I have to admit I never read anything by Peter Blatty again.

   For whatever reason, I didn't get to see "Exorcist" till I was well into my teens, and already a seasoned horror movie fan.
   My expectations may have been a bit too high, since I had been told "OMIGOD THE EXORCIST IS THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER DON'T WATCH IT ALONE YOU'LL POOP YOURSELF AND BE SCARRED FOR LIFE!" for so many years, but honestly.... I didn't really see what all the whoopy-doo was about. I guess I'd waited too long to catch it.
   As '70s "devil movies" go, I've always greatly preferred "The Omen" with Gregory Peck.

      The problem with The Omen was that Gregory Peck and Lee Remick were too old for their parts and Gregory Peck is one of my all time favorite actors...

      When I first saw "Omen" as a kid, I had only the barest idea who Gregory Peck was. In retrospect I can agree with you, but at the time it never occurred to me that he and Remick were "too old."

   I sneaked into the theater to watch it when I was 10. Big Mistake, HUGE.
   It took 30 years before I could watch it again and reconcile the scary imagery.

   Heck, yeah.  I slept with the lights on for a week. I also had my rosary close at hand and prayed on it.  I still regard it as the scariest movie ever made.

   I thought it was an instant classic!
   Anyone who was raised in or around the church probably found it to be more scarier than say a movie about Dracula or Frankenstein.
   The same could be said about "The Omen" as well.
   It's the religious theme connection that gave those movies an extra kick. I believe it's people's beliefs about God and the devil along with the fact the Catholic church stipulates Exorcisms are preformed.
   Lastly there was the whole notion of people having heart attacks in movie theatres and some theatres hiring nurses to be on stand by.
   Most likely it was all clever marketing!
   Today's scariest movies usually aren't about the "super natural" but more about sociopaths and psychopaths that creep people out such as "Silence of the Lambs" or "Fatal Attraction".
   Mental illness is the new "boogey man" because it really exists.

      I don't know about heart attacks (I do know a woman had one during Passion of the Christ). I do know people were running out of theaters, and one vomited, it was on the news at the time when the movie came out.

   Yes that movie truly terrorized me...but then again Scary movies of all sorts scare me....Omen really petrified me and I remember a TV movie about reincarnation that gave me all kinds of chills, and let's not even talk about It.....

    LOL I have a funny story about that.
    
    I used to love horror movies as a teen, and thought The Exorcist was a great movie (still do; it was brilliantly made, that is). And I USED to be able to watch it, but not anymore, lol.
    
    Here's the story: I was doing an informative speech for a college public speaking class. I chose horror make-up as my topic. After choosing my topic a museum in Queens announced they were running a movie make-up exhibit soon. Yes!
    
    Okay... so I go the day it's supposed to open. The guy sitting at the desk who is the spitting image of Stephen King tells me they delayed the opening a few days for the exhibit, so I can't go in yet. Come back Friday.
    
    Okay, Friday after classes in Brooklyn I take over an hour subway ride in the pouring rain in the winter time to this museum in Queens. Stephen King tells me they delayed it another day, but the museum is dead empty for a rainy weekday afternoon and he felt bad for me. So he told me to go walk through.
    
    So I go through and most of the front is all glamour make-up then prosthetics, then finally I come down to a long corridor that starts with horror movie make up. And I'm following it, twisting & turning, and it's decorated all spooky. And I come to this part with a giant glass exhibit case, and the life-size spinning head Reagan doll from the movie sitting right there on the bed. She's like 3 feet away from me on the other side of the glass.
    
    So I'm looking at her and getting REALLY creeped out. I was rushing to copy exhibit information down because this is good for my speech. And every now and then I glance at the doll. Creepy as hell, especially in the deserted hallway. Wait, is she looking at me? Was she looking at me before? Damn, let me copy this and get out of here.
    
    So I tell myself to just focus on the big plaque with all the info on the wall and I'm scribbling as fast as I can when a security guard goes past down the other end of the hallway. Scared me when I heard him, but okay. It's just a guard. So I look at the doll, and now her creepy-ass eyes are looking in HIS direction!!!
    
    Nearly hit the ceiling when I jumped. Left a brick in my pants. Then I realized she was set on a movement timer, and she would swivel her head and eyes back and forth.
    
    So I run into the next room and there is a big picture of little Linda Blair on the wall... then it suddenly turns into the demon. Ahh! I ran out of there!
    
    Movie has rattld me ever since; I rarely watch it anymore.
