   It really doesn't matter does it? It was on the tree of knowledge, and they ate it, and what did it do for them? nothing.
   No one knows what happened to the tree after they ate from it.

      You're right. What matters is that Adam and Eve eat a piece of fruit from tree and they disobeyed. But it also matters that the truth be told that it was not an apple that Adam and Eve ate.

   This silly story is 3500 years old, written by no one knows, and 3 billion Christians, Jews and Muslims believe it. Today's science, philosophy, anthropology, archaeology, biology, etc. is HOT OFF THE PRESS and the same 3 billion people are skeptical of the findings! I'd laugh, except not too many years ago I made it 3 billion and one on the 'believe in Genesis' crowd. It is a fable by the ancients, probably NOT written around 1500 BC, in the days when the legendary Moses could have lived, but more likely around 800-900 BC by someone who would have been a contemporary of Homer... if he was even a real person! There are reasons to believe that Genesis may have had as many as five different authors. There are the different names of God, two distinct versions of the Noah tale, etc. The Bible is a great treasury of ancient stories, but there isn't a chance in hell that any omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent god had anything to do with it. As of this writing, Mr. Michael Runyan has cataloged 1278 problems with Christianity over at kyroot.com. Old Testament, New Testament, it doesn't matter. The apologists are simply overwhelmed with the amount of evidence that the Bible is in err! The size and age of the universe, the evolutionary processes which are clearly evident, the HUGE problems with all of the miraculous happenstances scattered throughout the Bible. The fact that miracles, and angels, and devils are nowhere seen today, even though a few short millennia ago they used to love to visit earth and debauch human women, etc. Give it up!!! IT'S ALL JUST FICTION!!!

      The Bible will always be "silly" or "fictional" in the mind and heart of those who are without faith and accurate knowledge from the Bible. Physical people cannot understand spiritual things or spiritual people (1st Corinthians 2:14-16)

   Theories range from apples (not native to Middle East) to pomegranates (which can grow in the region) to something else we aren't familiar with.
   The interesting theory about WHERE it might have been goes back to the late Ice Age, when the world had only a tropical climate around the equator and arctic conditions elsewhere. They found the river beds of four rivers that combine in one area in what is now Saudi desert. If that is the garden of Eden (closely named for Aden while we're at it), then we're close to the parts of Iran where it is grown now with a climate zone that would have been that region where pomegranates could have grown when the world was cooler.
   This makes it more likely that the fruit was pomegranates and the garden of Eden is in that Horn of Africa / Saudi peninsula region.

      I thought that Eden was in Iraq, where the Tigress and Euphrates come together.
