Is it some kind of manual log cutting device?

That's a very good possibility SA Williams. Thanks for being the first one with your answer, and I am now following you.

oooh, i'm curious. if you ever find out, let us know!

my guess is that it's for timber (like SA said)... put a tree trunk on it, then knock off any small twigs and branches still attached.

    btw, nice picture!

My husband looked at it and said that it's a lathe.  Good for making rounded wood posts smile

The problem with it being a lathe SA Williams is that there isn't a power source to turn the piece of wood. It is all operated manually by hand.

oh, geeze...lol, I don't know then.  Maybe it is some kind of log tool.

SA Williams, a lathe was my first thought also, but your arm would get so very tired after manually turning this massive thing. But that was a wonderful effort in trying to figure out what this thing is , and please don't stop trying to guess.

It looks similar to a holder we used for debarking logs before using them to build or make fence posts

I'm glad to hear back from you again Terrie, and debarking is certainly a good possibility. P.S. (757) is the area code that goes along with that phone number in the photo.

Ok , thank you. Are any of the parts on the ends movable or fixed.

I think, but I'm not positive, that the ends do rotate. Keep in mind Terrie that there is no motorized mechanism of any kind on this thing what so ever.
