Do you live in a household with opposite political views?
I just heard a news story about a wife who divorced her husband because he was thinking of voting for a different candidate than her. I became curious about other households. I'd love to know if you live in a household where you and your significant other disagree on who should have won the presidency?
Oh, that's only the tip of the iceberg with my husband and me. We stay away from politics because we love each other more. That's probably why I vent so much here on HP.
But this is only one area where we chose each other over anything else. It is how you stay married for 40 years. Our politics have gravitated to the edges of Left and Right, just as the country has. There is no longer a middle in which to compromise. So in our house, we keep our opinions to ourselves and each vote our own convictions.
The case study for that is James Carville and Mary Matalin - he is a Democrat political strategist, she's a Republican one. And been together more than 20 years (he worked for Bill Clinton in the 1990s while she was on the other side of the aisle politically).
Thanks Tamara, I am referring to a story where the wife asked for a divorce because her husband merely "thought" of voting republican. See the Gayle McCormick story. There are many similar stories, but this one caught my attention.
Marlene, I was about 2 comment until I read U want a specific response 2 that particular situation.100% ludicrous! That woman was just waiting 4 an excuse 2 divorce!! She chose an absolutely incredible & unacceptable 1 & she qualifies as STUP
No, Paula, not a specific situation. Just... do you live in a household where you and your significant other have differing political views. Nothing more in depth than that.
It is good that people have different political views and they have to be wise enough to accept each others.
yes, most household spouses have different view of candidate, don't have to be the same sides
This is very funny for my household. Hillary went with Bill to Vietnam to open relations. Hillary spoke eloquently and charismaticaly to the Vietnamese women about rights and upper place in society. Vietnam being communist really did/does have equality for women - one thing they do well. So she just fired up the women and they idolized her. (a funny side note is that so did Hanoi Jane)
So we do not dance around the issues of women and conservative perspectives. We go after it in the kitchen. And we always agree that these top leaders are just awesome. It is not about hating one or the other. It is respectfully choosing who is best.
Her being and immigrant will stoke some mighty discussions tonight as she is so law abiding and upholding, she rarely sees gray.
And we shall disagree here and there. But we are some of those old school types, that no matter what we support our elected officials.

Can you be friends with someone who is passionate about political views that contradict yours?I seem to see more and more friendships and family arguments over politics. Whatever happened to "agree to disagree." Can you move past the points you disagree on? If not, why?

How does the method by which you were parented affect your political views?I have always been fascinated with the work of Dr. George Lakoff, Professor of Linguistics at Berkeley in CA. His theory is that our political leanings reflect the way they were parented. If you were raised with...

I remember in school we were inundated by democratic ways of thinking. It was mostly in elementary school, but those influences weren't as powerful as the ones my parent's taught me.I always knew my parents were republican, but I never knew what that meant until I was in high school/ early college...
