Should leakers of govt info, regardless of classification, be charged with treason?
Whether it be a transcript of a phone call, a picture, or a serious intelligence leak; the very fact that sensitive information is being circulated to the press and the world has implications for America. Playing politics is getting dangerous for the nations security. Or do you think 100% transparency should be the plan?
Ralph, this is a very complicated subject your asking about. There is no easy black/white answer.
It is obvious we have some persons or agencies who leak information that would politically aid them in some way. Is this treason? I'm guessing it could be depending on the information that is leaked. Secure information in the wrong hands could cause unnecessary death to those who are paid to defend us. In this case, it would for sure be treason.
The best way to find the source of a leak is to provide different versions of a false story to those suspected of leaking information. The version of the story that is leaked pretty well identifies the leaking person or agency.
Very complicated to say the least.
If a person leaks information that might lead to putting our troops, our diplomats in other countries, or our foreign operatives in danger, yes, I think that's treason.
If a person leaks something the government is doing that's wrong or illegal, that person should be treated as a whistle blower, and protected, rather than charged.
Who decides whether the govt is doing something wrong. Can you name any recent examples?
Sorry, I didn't realize I'd be required to draft legislation if I answered the question...
I agree with Lisa that there should be a distinction between whistle-blowing and national security. It does present a problem because sometimes there is a gray area between harm to the many and harm to the few.
I also have to agree with Lisa. Bad things do happen in government that need to be exposed. A whistle-blower should not be punished if what he/she divulges proves to be true..
Didn't realize this was gospel. "If a person leaks something the government is doing that's wrong or illegal, that person should be treated as a whistle blower, and protected, rather than charged."
Not gospel. Just my answer, which you clearly want to argue with. Why not just post your own answer to the question instead, so we get many viewpoints, without picking at each other?
Your answer is an opinion with no specifcs. It is vague and ambiguous and all I asked was clarification. Without that clarification how can your viewpoint be distinguished from your bias.
There are all kinds of different leaks?
Yes, it's my opinion. That's what the question asked for. If you have a different opinion, write your own answer.

The Senator from Nevada, Reid, says a Bain Capital employee told him Mitt Romney did not pay taxes for 10 years. If this proves to be true, does this change anything? Won't some people simply regard Romney as more of a hero, wishing they could do the same thing.
