Want to set up my own website/blog but have no clue about web design. Which platform is recommended?

I would like to know if there are some free or cheap platforms to explore managing my own website/blog and eventually earn some from advertising/affiliate. I have heard of wordpress but how flexible are the functions?

There are a whole bunch of different free places.  Too bad a company is here today and gone tomorrow. sad  What ever you do make sure you archive it so  on the wayback machine so when the company folds - you still have your stuff.
    https://archive.org/web/

Happened to me more than once over the years.
Free website will have ads on them and your blog.
No need to learn any HTTP. There are templates.
Get unlimited free, also if want to add images, mp3 or videos then take that in consideration. That's one good thing about HP. Have all that.

You can start with WordPress as it costs around $3 and you can start your website/blog with simple themes. There are many plugins also available which can be helpful for your site. You can use different widgets and Seo tools in WordPress and WordPress sites are more Seo friendly and easier to Rank. You can also try WIX, this is also easy to use. You just need to drag and drop elements.

I Hope this would be useful for you

Thanks! Does WIX and Wordpress  restrict/ limit you from adding on affiliate links? I heard the free version of wordpress does. Can I also start Wordpress using the free version then subsequently have my own domain using their platform?

Wordpress.org is your own website, so no restrictions. You need to buy a domain name and pay for hosting fees to use it.

Wordpress.com is a free blog platform that does have many restrictions. It does not belong to you.

Weebly.com is another place that is easy to figure out and free to use. It allows a lot more freedom to sell affiliate products than HubPages. You can build any type of site or blog you want. All the themes and templates are included. You can use their website URL or you can buy a domain name and use it on your free site.

I have used Weebly and WordPress.
Weebly is easy to understand but they limit you to 6 pages or you pay extra.
If you are going to require a big site, opt for WordPress.
There are some excellent videos on Youtube which can answer most questions about WordPress.
