You must remember that in the bible days Jesus taught that sickness and illnesses were caused by Demons. The Bible also states that “if there are any among you that are sick to call on the Elders of the church” not the doctors. Health care is based on science and even though many of the private hospitals are now owned by religious institutions the early Churches rejected Science as being a tool of the devil.
There are many people dead today simply because they were instructed by clergy to pray and trust in God instead of seeking Medical Care. And by the time they realize that prayer isn’t working it’s to late for the healthcare institution keep them alive.
That's a real sensitive issue in a world where science is the only measure of reality.
I am totally blown away by the stuff I was reading about the Egyptian Antony...he spent years as a hermit defending his ascetic lifestyle and battling all kinds of demons. If one allows the imagination to go with the story then the mention of fighting off the entity in a large silver disc really makes the entire alien/human connection more interesting and thought provoking.
The question was whether religion and health are the same thing. Again there can not be a certain answer to that so we are left with a base for argument that at best can bring up sides based on pure speculation.
Just for the cause of stirring up the shiat....i'm in for yes. Truly religious people...not church going hypocrites who throw silver into a plate and walk out worst sinners than they came in, but those who might subscribe to the same beliefs and rituals that were once only understood in esoteric circles can manifest health through religion. Spiritual, physical, and mental health...inwards and outwards.
Ask me again tommorrow....i reserve the right to change my mind.
Already an after thought....
Religion is both white magic and black magic. There are alchemists of time on both sides of the equation.
Chapter and verse, please? Jesus, if I recall, never said that illness was caused by demons. In fact, the Gospels report that Jesus treated physical ailments and demonic possessions, well, differently.
SPIRITUAL WARFARE: Demons of Sickness and Infirmity
JESUS IS LORD
B. Childress
Sep 26 2008 08:00AM
Jesus made no hard-and-fast distinction between healing sickness and expelling demons.
"Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his
hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art
Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ." Luke 4:40-
41
This account makes it clear that many of their sicknesses were caused by demons. Demons can, I (Derek Prince)
believe, be the cause of almost every kind of physical pain and sickness, but it takes discernment to distinguish
between sicknesses or pains that have a demonic cause and those that are purely physical. With our limited
understanding, we may find it difficult to envisage how a spiritual entity such as a demon can occupy a physical space,
such as an area of the human body. But whether we understand it or not, the fact is that it happens and that is
depicted frequently in Scripture.
The gospels record that Jesus healed the mute, deaf, and blind by expelling demons (see Matthew 9:32-33; 12:22;
Luke 11:14). In Luke 13:11-16 Jesus met a woman who had suffered from what we might call spinal curvature or
scoliosis for eighteen years. Although her condition seemed to be purely physical, Jesus declared that she had been
bound by a "spirit of infirmity." On that basis He set her free and she was completely healed. In Mark 9:17-29 Jesus
dealt with a boy who had the symptoms of epilepsy. He confronted it, however, as "a dumb and deaf spirit" (verse 25).
When the demon was expelled, the boy was healed. Nearly two thousand year have passed, but the same principles
still apply.
Jesus also said that people should not be judged because they were afflicted. Their illness and their cure might be a demonstration of God's grace.
Interesting slant on ignorance! Surely most people are able to see the co-relationships between: some religious threads - fruitcakes - mental illhealth.
Lita has some good links on the other thread.
Not the same, but perhaps have a close association.
For example, spirituality can be either healthy for a person. (I"m not so sure about religion.)
Health can become a spiritually motivated thing to some (although some religions do promote health.)
to a lot of people, religion is their drug!!!
can't say that those equal the same thing.
but religion is man made, it's what man says about god or a supreme being. it's not the same as a spiritual awareness which everyone has within.
spiritual, mental, physical health are all interrelated.
my beliefs anyway~
That's all good. No quotes from a book is always a good sign!
Obviously no. Health is the slowest possible rate at which one can die and Religion is insurance in this world against fire in the next.
I like the simple connotations of that statement. Fire in the next...
Reminds me of the story about reincarnation that I read recently where we as humans have a memory and we also have an intuitive sense where we get "deja vu" experiences. Yet most of us wonder where these thoughts come from.
That story went that we just live on forever in a shell which is our biological body. At death a guy comes up to us and pulls one of those memory erasing moves that the dudes in Men in Black did with those who were exposed to the truth. When we return to our biological body then we start the cycle of learning all over again. But there is a reason for reincarnating. We do so to perfect our karma. Someday, according to the cosmic clock keeper, we get it right and the only at that point do the Men in Black decide to, or allow us to keep full memory of being or of being eternal.
A life lived well moves you up the ladder closer to the eternal flame of knowledge. A life lived like a shiat moves you down the ladder a few steps.
Ok...so I catch a cold...I am demon posessed and going to hell! So much for what Christ did on the cross then. I don't know of anyone who never gets sick.
I mean, since He is not here physically to cast out the demon/cold.
In the 14th century an individual was required to get a theology degree before he was allowed to get a medical degree. This was a mandate from the Christian Church that controlled everything in the world. A physician and scientist couldn’t do or say anything without the approval of the Pope and hierarchy of the Church.
It wasn’t until the Reformation Period that Scientists and Doctors launched their fight against the control of the Church which allowed them to find cures and develop treatments that’s responsible for what we have in healthcare today. Before then people were dying needlessly. This is why many Doctors and Scientist are non-believes today. I’ve heard many Ministers preach, call Jesus first and go to the Doctor as a last result.
The strongest connection between fundamentalist religion and health is that fundamental religion is a sure sign of mental illness. Studies are being done!
Personally I am proudly insane.
If the world we live in thinks of us as sane, we have real problems!
So what IS sane? Is it the sate of the majority, the minority, the select few, or none of the above?
Apparently not the majority, or the world would be in better shape, I think it is the minority myself based on that alone.
Religion and health is not the same thing. But one helps to understand the other in some deeper way.
Assume that you are too critically sick, all the efforts of doctors and specialists become no avail and you are desperate to live; will you not, even if you are a non-believer right now, attempt to pray to a higher force, which might be in overall control of the good, bad and the other needs of the creation, to give you a helping hand?
Let us assume that after your sincere and heartfelt prayer, you start recovering, will you not....

My thoughts r..
When you are a born again, what ever you call it. You become
more aware of how to eat better. To being an example maker. You have more of an awareness of the health factors, in my opinion. When you get a flu or etc.. we have all those cold remedies and warm food to consume. And, of course lots of sleep. Viruses has a annoying habit of draining your energy.

homosexuality was classified as a mental illness until recently,There is a good deal to be said about belief and health, although I would speculate that self belief, and the resulting self care are more of the connection than religion.
Are christians healthier in any respect than atheists? or buddhists? or whoever?
On a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual/moral level?
Hi Aya Katz :-)
In my opinion..
Virus is a flu.. take two aspirins, cold remedies and
sleep it off.
Demons, are in your head the only way to cure that is to talk
to your family and bond with them and church. He hates closen.
He is opposite than God/Jesus.

Is the mind and the brain one and the same thing or are they different entities? What do you think? If the world is a dichotomy, I would argue that, no, they are not the same. One is appearance, to borrow a term from Plato, the greek philosopher, and the other is reality. On the other hand if I were...

As an athiest, why do you think that religious people believe in god?to me it is about fear. fear of dying and knowing it's over, fear of being responsible for your wrongs without having satan to blame for an influence. basically fear. why do you think they believe?

I'm sick to death of listening to people bash religion with this line of thinking... "Where is my freedom from your religion?" Well... Where is MY freedom from YOURS? Yours is being taught in the schools as Science... call it Evolution if you will but the fact is that...
