The very thing that makes the government rich will make us poor.

Any form of government will always have a tendency to become ever more totalitarian.

The original lyrics are about a man earning money that his wife is spending. Odd choice.

What kind of weird fake news are you trying to push? Here are the original lyrics:

My father told me, lying on his bed of death
"Boy," he says, "woman she's gonna make it, don't fool your self
'Cause she's got something to make a man lay that money, uh, right in her hand
And the very thing that makes her rich will make you poor
The very thing that makes her rich will make you poor"
                  That's right!

Well, I put you behind the wheel of a deuce and a quarter, yes I did
Had you living like a rich man's daughter, yes I did, I sure did
While you were living high on the hog
You had me down here scuffling like a dog
Well, the very thing that makes you rich makes me poor
The very thing that makes you rich makes me poor

Don't you never ever make such a bad mistake
You know I'd rather climb into bed with a rattlesnake
Then to work hard every day bringing that woman all my pay
The very thing that makes you rich makes me poor
                  Makes me so damn poor
The thing that makes her rich makes me poor
The very thing that makes you rich make me poor
Very thing that makes you rich makes me poor

Ry Cooder's views are liberal. He is very cooly liberal. I don't know what he thinks of the Democratic Party THESE days, though. I wish he would join us here on HP.
Anyway, listen to that whole record from 1979. Its called "Bop 'til You Drop."
It was recorded with state of the art digital equipment that year. It was probably the last new record I bought.

      Money is what changed it.

According to the Constitution's Preamble there are not supposed to be any differences in the financial status of any people so if the nation is rich every man is and if it is poor every man is poor. That is why we need to use the Constitution [ https://hubpages.com/politics/The-U-S-C … ons-Spirit ] and get this nation in line with it.

I don't see anything in the preamble that speaks to financial status? Could you explain your conclusion?

This is a scholar's interpretation of the Preamble:

"The preamble is the introduction to the Constitution. It outlines the general goals of the framers: to create a just government and to ensure peace, an adequate national defense and a healthy, free nation. With its first three words, “We the People,” the preamble emphasizes that the nation is to be ruled by the people— not a king or a dictator, not the president, Supreme Court justices, members of Congress or state legislators. The U.S. Supreme Court held in 1905 (Jacobson v. Massachusetts) that the preamble is not a source of federal power or individuals’ rights. Rather, all rights and powers are set out in the articles and amendments that follow."

I think the key is in Jacobson v. Massachusetts. "...not a source of federal power or individual's rights...."

Look at in order to form a more perfect union, equal Justice, tranquility and common welfare all of those together say there is to be a equal pay because in order for a company to obtain money for its services every worker has to be on the job. How can one earning $25 an hour be satisfied with someone else getting $25,000 per hour? Is there any unity in that behavior?

I take it you are schooled to use the words without knowing their meanings. If so, it is time to educate yourself in the meanings, plural, of words. Most words' meaning will change in the context used. A perfect union means everyone thinks about everyone else and not selfishly "this is mine". If we were a United Nation that would be our mentality.

No, governmental spending won't cure social ills; however, individual responsibility & accountability will.  People have to learn to be responsible & look into themselves to solve whatever socioeconomic problems they have.  People have to learn that it is mostly their fault for many problems they have.  There are those who love to look to the government to rescue them.  They view the government as their parents.

... and success is motivating! Success is the goal. How to succeed in life is the challenge we all happily face.
... as long as it (this challenge) is not forced upon us.
        And yet it is.
In school, we are forced to get high marks. We are forced to study subjects and excel in them whether we are interested and motivated or not.
Adults need to find ways to encourage the youth and to discover what each child has come to do. What are the intrinsic motivations and interests? Parents and teachers need to become sensitive to children and allow them to blossom while providing appropriate boundaries.

Reconfigured lyrics by philosopher, Ry Cooder:

    Son:
My father told me, lying on his bed of death,
"Boy, " he says, " The government's gonna make it, don't fool your self
'cause its got something to make a man (and a woman) lay that money right in its hand ...
And the very thing that makes IT rich will make you poor!

    Repeating:
The very thing that makes IT rich will make you poor!

    To the government:

Well, I put you behind the wheel of a deuce and a quarter!
    Yes I did!
I had you living like a rich man! Yes I did! I sure did!
While you were living HIGH ON THE HOG
You had me down here scuffling LIKE A DOG !!!!!!
Well, the very thing that MAKES YOU RICH,
    MAKES ME POOR!

    Repeating:
The Very Thing That Makes You Rich Makes Me Poor

    Father:

Don't you never ever make such a bad mistake!
You know I'd rather climb into bed with a rattlesnake!
Then to work hard every day bringing that GOVERNMENT
    All my pay!
The very thing that makes IT rich, makes me poor ...
    So damn poor!
The thing that makes IT rich, makes me poor ...
The very thing that makes IT rich, makes me poor ...
Very thing that makes IT rich, makes me poor ...

    So damned poor!

    Q. What is that thing that the government has?
    A. People like Sandy Cortez and Bernie Sanders

And what do they ACTUALLY have?

    1. MizBejabbers profile image88
MizBejabbersposted 4 years agoin reply to this

What do they actually have? Big ideas that will bankrupt the U.S. Sanders is just an angry old man, angry, I think because the U.S. won't buy his brand of socialism. Jake Tapper gave him way too much time in the debates last night. He's passing his torch on to Cortez. This country cannot have everyone financially equal. There is no such thing!
No, I am not wealthy nor did I come from wealth. My family was poor after WWII, but we had something that many other poor people did not have, intelligence and ambition. We were able to work our way our of minimum wage jobs into good careers. We did it by hard work, not by being given "nest eggs" and free tuition and health care from the government. I saw a lot of young poor people, even children of so-called "white trash" do the same thing. They managed to get educations and worked themselves into good careers and even positions of authority. I believe that all of these proposed giveaways would sap our young people of ambition.
One social injustice I would like to see rectified is educational opportunities. Why has the price of college risen so sharply in the last 25 years? The price of attending college should be lowered so the young wouldn't have to mortgage their futures to attend. In addition, lower percentage rates for student loans should be in effect for those who do need assistance. But free college for everyone, why! I'm thankful for our public schools today, but look at them and see what has happened. Are they on their way out? Republicans have their own agenda by trying to get free tuition for kids to attend private schools via government vouchers. That is equivalent to free college for even the wealthy kids. So their opposition is hypocritical.
As grandma would say, "Lawdy, lawdy, what's this country coming to?"

I just wish a good middle-of-the-road candidate would run. I'm so sick of the extremists of both sides! I can't stand the misogynist Republicans because I spent nearly 20 years proving that women had a place in broadcasting, in the world, and even a voice in their own marriages. Especially after watching last night's debates very closely, I'm afraid the Dems are just setting themselves up for another Trump victory. I hope tonight's debate has some level-headed politicians in it for a change. (Level-headed politician, that's an oxymoron, isn't it?)

Yes, so far he is my pick, but he keeps being put down because of his age and the socialist Dems are raising Cain over the way he handled things before some of them were born. I hope tonight's debates will keep him out front.

I used to support Elizabeth Warren, but she lost me when she joined the socialists.

    Worth considering:

"Why has the price of college risen so sharply in the last 25 years? (Very Good Question)
The price of attending college should be lowered so the young wouldn't have to mortgage their futures to attend."

"... lower percentage rates for student loans ... for those who ... need assistance."

"But free college for everyone? WHY?? "

"I'm thankful for our public schools today, but look at them and see what has happened. Are they on their way out?"

What will happen to free college?

"Republicans have their own agenda by trying to get free tuition for kids to attend private schools via government vouchers." (Huh?)

The song sounded like it was about a woman. Yet relates to me more about the Government because only once a woman attempted to make me poor. Where the Government had many shots at me.

Extreme, yet in the context of comedy it make sense.  George Carlin veiw was. The upper class dose none of the work and pays none of the taxes. The middle class dose all of the work and pays all of the taxes. The poor is just there to scare the hell out of the middle class. To make sure they showin'up at those jobs. .
