Windows Users - How long does your computer take to boot up?

   Six months ago, I bought a very fast laptop, which booted up very quickly. then I turned off the Vista Aero crap, and it was faster still.
   
   Now that I have loaded it up with all sorts of programs, it takes over 4 minutes to boot up to the point where everything is loaded, and the computer is usable.
   
   How long does your computer take to boot up?
   
   (I'm off to do some surgery on mine this afternoon )

      sounds like you have too many programs running at start up, you need to go into that menu and disable anything not needed at initial start up to cut down on the lag, or increase your RAM as a last resort.

         That's the first place I'm starting, together with uninstalling a lot of stuff that I'm not usinfg.
         Have already got 4 gigs RAM, so that's probably not the culprit.
         
         @ Misha: I assume you know the consequences of installing the pre release versions of 7? (ie you're virtually forced into buying it if you've installed it onto a computer that you don't want to reformat when the trial period is over?)

      my computer takes up around the same time as yours to boot up.  I usually do not mind it much because i rarely shut it down.  when im not using it, i just leave it on stand by most of the time

   IDK, I am running W7 RC1 for several months, and don;t even notice the boot up time.

      Me too, it's like 5 seconds.   As for the forced upgrade, I heard it's free for vista users - even if it's not, I use tech net.... (and there are ways to trick your computer into 'upgrading' not fresh installing)

   Oh yeah, I do Eric. At the end I do hold MCSE (Can I brag, too? ). Yet it was back at XP times, and all my home computers are either XP or W7, except for my wife's work computer, which is Vista
   
   But seriously, I don;t mind going total W7, it served me quite nice so far. In fact I already bought two licenses - for all my home computers

   I just purchased a new computer with Vista. (I held off for a long time, because I was skeptical) Turns out, I actually like Vista more than I thought I would!
   
   Anyways, my start up time is about 1 minute, maybe? I have 6 or 8 gigs RAM and a fast processor. I used to dread starting up/restarting my old computer and would never shut it off or simply hibernate it frequently. I turn this one off nightly.
   
   I love this new computer! I think I could probably conquer the world with my 21" widescreen and Excel. Very fast and efficient!

   Since my PC started smoking (never a good sign) I have been using my old laptop
   Still running XPSP3 with under a gig of ram on the poor old steam driven Toshiba Satellite.
   
   Boot time including TSR's is probably over 3 minutes. That is about as quick as I can get it to boot without having to spend time loading programs later.

   Booting time of your PC depends upon the programs that are active. Click Start>Run, type "msconfig"(without quotes),and you will be shown System Configuration Utility box, select Selective Startup, then click Startup button above, and uncheck the programs you won't use often. Restart.
   See if there's the difference. That is my setup in my computer.
   Hope this will help.

   Mine has Vista, and I just timed it out of curiosity.  It took 50 seconds from switch-on to password.  Allowing for typing in the password, the whole thing took about 1 minute and a few seconds.  That, though, is for "ready-to-go" if I didn't have two different phones connected to it.  Because I wait for the phone software to do its thing, I'm not really on Firefox until that's done.  Without the phones as start-up programs I could be on Firefox in that minute-plus range.
