Exemplore traffic crash?

   Has anyone else noticed that traffic to Exemplore has plummeted?
   
   My articles, which have consistently been at the top of Google results, have disappeared into the dark depths.

      Hi Bev, I have no articles on Exemplore so don't know the ins and outs of that niche site but having had plenty of experience on Owlcation I can only ask -
      
      are you updating regularly?
      are your articles competitive, comprehensive, better than the rest on similar subjects?
      are you writing fresh material on a regular basis?
      
      I keep a keen eye on my rankings and try to stay up there with the top sites. So far, so good. As an experienced writer here on HP I feel certain that you are doing everything in your power to stay up there. But just in case, it might be worth you having a review, a refresh? Don't know, could be worth your while. Then again, if your own site is doing well with Adsense you might want to pour your energies into that. Good luck. Please keep us all up to date.

   I have a few Exemplore articles on this account and another big account with a bunch of them.  For me, there was a sharp decline over a year ago, and it continues on a downward trend.
   
   I am curious to know what sites (or types of sites) you are seeing rise to the top of the SERPs for your topics. I have a few theories about what is going on here.

      Pinterest, mostly. Amazon and a few miscellaneous sites. Also Buzzfeed and various newspapers.
      
      It used to be YouTube but not seeing so many in the results.

         What I see is a lot of news and mainstream magazine sites surpassing niche enthusiast sites in the rankings. I believe harmless fringe topics are getting lumped into the dangerous conspiracy theory bucket and search engines have tried to promote larger, what they see as more credible sources when it comes to things like UFOs, cryptozoology, etc.
         
         The thing is, there are enthusiast sites out there with a lot more original research and a greater knowledge base than popular magazines and news outlets. But they have fallen in the rankings, as search engines attempt to steer people's thought in  (what they think is) the correct direction.
         
         I think Explore has gotten wrapped up in all of that.
         
         All of this is just my theory based on what I've seen over the past year or so.

            Yes, that could be it, Eric. My own site (tarot) had a substantial dip six months ago but is slowly coming back up. The commercial stuff seems to do a lot better.

      Maybe, but this has happened over the past year. My traffic has gone down by two thirds.

   Exemplore is one of the niches I've never written anything for. It must be bad for you, Bev, as it's your primary focus. It's often said that writers on here should specialize and create a strong sense of expertise. There is much merit in that, I'm sure, but I have always been wary, for reasons like this, where a niche goes down the tubes. Hopefully, it will recover, but for me, it confirms my cautious approach of not putting all my eggs in one basket. Even if we write well and to the best of our ability, so much of this thing is outside our control.

      I only have two articles there, but they appear to have improved, traffic-wise, since last month but they were doing better a couple months ago. As far as position in Google, not too bad.

   Well, I do update... but find it doesn't always make much difference. I discovered yesterday that a couple of articles which had usually picked up some traffic had had their titles radically changed by editors and were floundering with zero views I do wish they would keep the editing to minor changes.
   
   Of course my articles are the best they can be Really, though, I aim to make them pretty comprehensive and better than others.
   
   Not publishing as much here lately. It's been disheartening over the last year; my views have gone from 9k per day to less than 4k. I can't see the point of writing my socks off in order to tread water. I want to see growth in my stats.
   
   Today, I've done the unthinkable and taken an article from HP and republished it on my site as an article and a related blog post. I haven't unpublished it here either. If it goes well 'over there' I might repeat the exercise. It's something I've always advised against, but we'll see.

      Oh hope not but you never know. Are these guides specialist Eugene? I wonder about the Google algorithms, or is this a general trend, a number of random events smurgling together to produce current downward figures?
      It will be great once the pandemic is FINALLY over (?) and things settle down into relative routine again, then the traffic views will stabilise. What's your take on updating, refreshing, writing new material? I'm all for it.

         The math guides are difficult to update. They're pretty much self-contained, and long (around 4000 words) and my worry is that Google may already penalize for overly long articles. Maybe it's just due to school holidays or lazy kids.
