    What is DMOZ?

The Open Directory Project  (also known as the Open Directory or ODP) is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It has over 4 million websites listed.   It is constructed and maintained by a huge, global community of volunteer editors.  It has over 4 million websites listed.  Getting a website listed in DMOZ can be very frustrating as it may take a very long time.  But once listed, it can have some great results in terms of search engine rankings.

Well, I'm happy u made it - many others dont and for some reason dmoz are fading. It will be worthless in the next Google algorithm change since its been corrupted by fools.

I suggest reading this article: http://hubpages.com/hub/Corrupted-poker-sites

I listed with them many, many months ago.  So long ago, I've forgotten to go back and see if I'm showing up yet.

Well, if you've never tried to submit to DMOZ, you won't understand why I am so happy:smile))
Imagine that you have been listed in Yahoo's directory for free....instead of paying $300...

I just gave up DMOZ.... I tried several times and it's been 5, 6 months since my last submission and I still don't have anything there. I guess money does talk better.

seohowtoposted 15 years agoin reply to this

unfortunately, not always:( DMOZ is Google's project and you obviously get benefits from being listed there... while other directories may loose their PR after you paid to get listed...

Congrats. It takes a lot of time and effort to get listed on DMOZ smile

Yeah, I know, I tried it twice without success, although in the category that I tried to submit there are only 3 sites listed. And what got me really mad was that one of those sites does not exist.... I even tried to contact the editor but never heard from them. Thus, I have paid my due diligence already.

well...sorry to hear. I don't know if it makes you feel better, but I know people that tried more more than twice and still didn't get listed:sad(. Don't give up, check it every month, but submit only once during the six month period.

I was once told not to resubmit to DMOZ within a 9 month period or you'd run the chance of not getting listed.  I am still not listed after 7 months.  But while you wait, here is another site that you can submit your site to many free directories.  Try this www.isedb.com.  When you get to that site scroll down and look for free directories on the left hand side.  It is voluntary like DMOZ but does not take nearly as long.  It is time consuming but it is FREE.  Through this site I am already listed in many directories.  Give it a try!

A Rule of Thumb when submitting to directories - do not submit your site to more than 5 or 6 directories in any one day.  Any more can also run you the chance of not getting listed.

Take time and be very, very punctual when you prepare your submission to DMOZ. It is free, but it is edited by very professional volunteer editors, who are web professionals.
Check it many times...optimize it and strictly follow the rules of DMOZ submission. Don't submit it the same day, because in most cases you'll change or correct your submission text, next day:)...Category is very important part of your submission.
(My additional tip: it helps a lot, if you get to know your local DMOZ editor, because in most cases your submission is going to be in her/his domain. How: read the most trusted SEO blogs)

Well, it is too complicated. All you have to do is to read before submitting other listings and see how they did the description, which categories they used etc. Analyze your competitors, if they have been listed.

Pay for Yahoo and BOTW and forget about DMOZ - at least this is what I do smile It's not worth all that effort and frustration.

    Now they work smile
Seriously, been there, done that. I submitted it with a few weeks or more interval probably a dozen times already to no avail. I went through frustration to indifference. It's like Wikipedia, with the only difference that in Wikipedia you can at least get the reason they don't want your link sometimes. "Site plastered with Adsense and Adbrite" can't be any good for them, and removing the income stream for a year just to increase chances of being approved over there does not make any sense to me. smile

Paying Yahoo and Best of The Web sounds pricey since I'm not making much. Would it really increase my traffic that much?

Not sure about Best of the Web, but I think Y! directory helps your sites on first page for its search and Google. I am pissed because the sites that beat me to google positions are the ones listed in either DMOZ or Y! or both.... I've been building link and have more links than them but they still beat me to it. Well, they do have dedicated server where as I am using shared hosting.... It really really really sucks!

Ooops, sorry Mark, I missed you question, thanks to Jim for bringing it back to my attention smile

Well, it is not about traffic, at least not direct traffic from those directories. This traffic is negligible. It is about ranking with search engines. I did not make controlled tests on that, but people that I trust did, and they concluded it's worth it - providing you do enough SEO and monetize your site properly. If you don't, it's a waste of money.

BOTW is "Best of the Web" paid directory.
